Well lads & lasses, many of you use blonde bulls? Suppost to be very good for easy calving with heifers ect.
We wer thinking of putting a blonde on sum 3/4 to pure breed Simmental heifers and a few cows. Do they cross well? Iv seen sum pure breed heifers that wouldn't impress but you get that on every breed. These would be big u grade heifers and cows. Any info appreciateed. Tanx

Ya using one here, a son of OXY as a terminal sire. Ok calving but wouldn't normally use him on heifers. Mix of U and R grade calves from him. Do your homework on icbf before deciding would be my advice. Hard to find any with high maternal figures though, as a breed milk is lacking, as usual though there are exceptions. Most of our cows are angus x.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

We are thinking more of the terminal type bull to, not looking for cow makers from the calves more selling off the cow or keep untill slaughter. Do many of your calves bulk out with good mussel at 7 or 8 months old?

They wouldn't be huge, tops of them would be around 3ookg at 6 months, on no meal. Few pics on here if you dig through my old posts. Most of them are black or dark brown, only time we get reds is if there is a bit of lim back in the cows breeding.

I have blonde on the first calvers this autumn. They would be mainly lim x with a couple of simx. This bull throws slips of calves that just seem to bloom at 6-7 weeks. Serious cross on blue cows but the few calves ive seen are good enough animals, they should make super breeders if you have heifers.

    Hi blue,

do you find the blondes take a bit of extra time with them over say CH or LM?

Ive one 293 days here today and not a gig out of her.. had a CH last year 286 days from insemination.. only used 2 blonde straws this year for first time this year so just wondering

Sorry can't compare with ch or lim. But I put my blonde in with cows about a week earlier than angus and aubrac bulls. If you use a longer gestation bull on a lim or ch cow, breeds which would normally take a bit of time anyway, you are getting the longer gestation from both sides of the family. Haven't explained it very well, say you had a bb cow and a lim cow in calf to the same bull, the bb cow would (probably) calve first.

    What breed cow have you?

I would agree with this. I have a Lim/Simx first calver and she calved no bother to a blonde this year. Its a lovely calf and I am think of using a blonde on my 2 blue cows and blue heifer as a result of this.
