I knew the car was going to fail as I had the Pre-NCT inspection done last week by my mechanic.

    His List:
    Dodgy Handbrake
    Drop Link gone
Battery Mounting Clip not there (bolt sheared)
    Broken Drivers Seat
    No spare
Small Hole in the flexible joint (very noisy)
    Brake discs worn
    O2 sensor fault
Suspension is reaching it's limit, touch and go as to whether it will pass

    NCT Testers List
    Handbrake
    Battery Mounting Clip
    That is all.

How in the name of god did he not notice that there was no spare there, the other bits I'm not worried about as it's now booked in to get all of the above done, including getting a replacement spare. Just how in the name of God does the NCT miss these things?

    You don't need a spare.

But if you have one, it has to be road legal.

Also, maybe your mechanic is taking you for a ride?

ah, the old pre NCT inspection - putting mechanics kids through college for years.

I know a lad who spent €1200 on fixing stuff on an old Mondeo after a "free" pre NCT inspection and still failed.

    Spare not required for NCT.

A spare tyre is not required for NCT.
As for the other stuff, they may be close to the limit but still pass.

How much was the Pre-NCT inspection ?
Always thought these were a waste of money, paying to check it twice.
you could take it back to NCT center and tell them to recheck it with the fail list the pre test gave you .:D

Seriously??? Yet they'd fail a spare if it's threads were half a millimeter below limit? FML.

Mechanic is my uncle. Pre-NCT didn't cost me a Bob.

Lots of cars don't have spares, just a can of tyre weld

Lol, yeah there has to be a limit at some point doesn't it?
"Ah sure be grand" wouldn't really work at the NCT...

If you don't have a spare, you can't put a dodgy tyre on the car and only an idiot would keep driving around on a flat.

If you do have a spare, chances are you'll put it on the car whatever the condition if the need arises.

    Makes sense to me.

Some cars don't have spare tyres as standard.

If youre paying specifically for a pre-NCT test then I agree thats its a complete waste of time.

However, in the past couple of years I have taken to get my car serviced before the NCT, and I will ask my mechanic (who I trust not to take me for a ride) to give it a once over and see if anything obviously jumps out as an issue (which I would sort of expect from a proper service anyway tbh). Its not about getting the car through the test, its about ensuring that its in good condition. Passing the test is just an added bonus really!

He may just have mentioned it as an issue in the interest of being thorough in fairness, rather than as a test failure.
