My partner is really interested in doing an apprentiship in mechanics with fas but already has a job and works between 20 -30 hours per week. Can he still get an apprentiship with fas or does he have to be unemployed ?

Apprenticeships in Ireland can only be taken up by persons with a willing employer in the relevant trade. Basically he needs to find a garage willing to take him on full time as n apprentice. He would get paid for this, a little at first then more each year. The training is done by both the employer (on the job) and in block college placements (off job), apprentices are paid through both by either the employer (on the job phase) and FAS -now called Solas (off the job phase).

He should register his interest with the local FAS office for advise and incase they have any employers looking to recruit in contact with them. In reality though it will be down to him to find a garage to offer him an apprenticehip. Ask around friends and family do they know any mechanics and drop a cv into garages etc.
