    Hi all

im 27 and in my final year of a business and law degree which im studying part time. Up until just now ive been working full time in customer services. I have just reduced my hours to ensure i have enough study time for the final exam year.

i went to presentations for BDO and EY in DIT last year during the milkrounds. To my astonishment when i told them i was working and studying part time, they told me that the leaving cert points requirement would not be an issue.

Back when i was 17 doing the leaving, i stupidly forgot my calculator in paper 2 and just scraped a pass. I did ordinary in everything including maths.

I applied and my application was not successful. I got further feedback from EY who responded and advised that my answers to the questions were excellent but it was just that other applicants had already obtained the 2.1 degree. I had advised both in person and via email that i would be willing to resit my leaving cert if required for future applications. They advised me that the degree result is focused on even if the LC is not a strong area. So i should focus on the degree rather than repeating my leaving cert.

The recruitment staff said at their presentation said for me not to worry about the leaving cert and they were even thinking of removing the points requirement completely.

However, i have read stories here were people had a degree and masters in accounting and some work experience who were unsuccessful due to only having 300 points or so. Also others I have spoke with in college say that as its an employer's market that i would be able to compete with the other candidates coming with degrees, masters, 350 plus points.

Can anybody confirm if they know of anyone with such poor results getting taking in to graduate position in one of the big accounting / taxation companies?

I would like to work at one of the big 4 but i would be happy to get a position with any of the other big companies.

I last applied to the auditing department but i think i would like to get into taxation.

If I did a Postgraduate diploma in tax or accounting, what would my chances be being brutally realistic?
