No response after interview

I had a panel interview last week after two phone interviews and was told I would be notified by the end of last week. When I had heard nothing by yesterday I emailed HR asking for feedback which has gone unanswered. Is it normal policy for HR depts in large multinationals to not reply to unsuccessful candidates? It has been a long time since I last interviewed externally but I would of thought a simple email explaining that they had offered the role to someone else would be just a common courtesy.

You don't know that they have offered the role to someone else though, do you? The larger the company the more time it takes for firm up an offer, more managers to sign off on the decision etc. There could be any number of reasons you haven't heard from them yet (even after the email). It is unusual to not hear anything after an interview, even in the current climate.

You were right pow-wow, got the template response today. Just late was all.
Glad to see things haven't gotten as bad as I feared.
    Still need a job though:)
