VW Golf Mk5 interior roof light

    I have a 2004 VW Golf Tdi.

The interior light has stopped working. It used to work when the car was turned off and the key removed. If I fiddle around with the light switch it works sometimes but stops after a few days.

I think i need a whole new roof light kit - can anyone recommend where I could get this - secondhand if possible - based in Dublin - maybe someone can fix/sell

    Thanks in advance

The switch in it is a particularly crap design. Suggest you take it down and have a look. In mine the plastic had melted due to a build up of heat on a contact.
If you post up a good picture I'll know if its the same problem that I had.
I got mine working for now but would also like to replace the unit like you, probably from a breakers yard.

Would also mention that a poster put a list of salvage yards up in one of these forums the other day.

Here's a guide on taking down the unit,

You can use a loyalty card or whatever as a trim removal tool.

Once you get it down have a look at the contact legs of the switch for signs of melting and contact damage.

    Thanks for reply Random Access

If it is faulty like yours would I need a whole new lighting kit or can I just purchase the switch

In my case I would need the circuit board of sorts which the other parts are built on. It seems to be a common base on which they can add extra switches for sunroof etc.

As for the switch, it's a stretch to even call it that. You'll know what I mean when you see it. It's a crappy rocker with contacts. It's not really replaceable in my case as the board is slightly melted so I need a new entire board. But you really need to get a look at yours before you will know what's wrong.

You need a torx bit to take it down I think.

The roof light changed a bit in later models so might differ in cars later than ours. Post a pic when you can and might be able to see what's wrong.

Yeah they are probably sold used as entire unit. The outer shell may come in different colours for different interior shades. Not sure if they were sold in many colours.
