Hi guys I am looking for some help with a brand new top notch gaming PC. I was looking around at several places to buy one but then I said I would throw my hand at trying to build one. I am looking to build a PC that will run everything that is out at the moment on settings as high as possible. I am also looking for something that will have high upgradeability for the next 2 years if possible. This is my very first build so any hints tips or tricks apart from the sticky's would be greatly appreciated.

    1. What is your budget? 2000 is the max but like everybody I am looking for as much bang for my buck as possible;)

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Gaming

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? Nope

    5. Do you need a monitor? Yes

5a. If yes, what size do you need. Yes a nice size one at 1080p

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? [1920x1080/1440x900/etc.] [Yes/No]

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? keyboard and mouse anyway maybe speakers

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? With some time yes

    8. How can you pay? Visa/ Paypal

    9. When are you purchasing? Open ended no rush

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? Limerick/Clare border

Dont spend 2k. Spend like 800 and upgrade more often.

That's nonsense! You wouldn't get a top end gaming rig for 800 that will max out games. Processor and graphics cards in crossfire will last years! Also 1440P is class!

You'll get something that is at 90% for 800 euro and you can keep it at high level far easier. 2k is overkill. Its 95% for 1.5 times the cash.

? that makes no sense. I posted a 1440P build. It would go down to around 1200 if he wanted to stay at 1080P or 1100 if he decided to go i5 over i7

You are paying a hell of a lot more for very little noticeable boost in game.

Its a 1440P build which he has the budget for. R9 290 in crossfire will last hell of a long time.

No, it wont. It'll be outclassed by a 200 euro card in 2 years. You are far better off spending decent money on a good quality case, cooler, PSU and peripherals with a mind to upgrading more often.

Well, he did call his post "high-end gaming pc". Not "sensible pretty good gaming pc".

If you go with yahwhat's build, you definitely want to be shooting for 120Hz or 1440 monitors. If you don't want anything more than 1080p at 60Hz, a single R9 290 graphics card will run pretty much anything at ultra locked at 60Hz all day long.

True :) Wish someone had said this to me a few years back before i dropped 2.5k. ****ing hindsight :(

Graphics cards and processors are after hitting a stumbling block. Look at 2500K, 3570K and 4670K. Very little between them in the last three years.

R9 290 wont be outclassed or unusable maxing out games anytime soon especially at 1080P, a single one is even fine for 1440P which I currently have.

Yeah, I'd lead with that story: here's what 2.5k bought me 3 years ago (and then your system spec). It's a valid point for OP - don't think that you'll be extra future-proof if you build a high-end system. Exactly the opposite, it's the high-end stuff that devalues the most quickly. Especially graphics cards.

What processor ye get with your builds?

I disagree. That 800 euro worth of gfx grunt will be outclassed by significantly cheaper cards far sooner than you'd like.

Luck100: it was an 8800 gtx

That card was released eight years ago. Technology has come a long way since then! And I gauruntee that those two cards will last five years maxing out games at 1080P or even 1440P

Yes, it was a while ago now. I didn't claim it wasn't. I'd have been better off spending 200 euro and replacing it every 1.5/2 years. As would the OP.

You absolutely cannot guarantee anything about tech 5 years in advance, stop playing silly buggers

If you had to replace it every one or two years you would of having to buy a new motherboard, new power supply, new case, new ram, new hard drive, new processor

No you wouldn't. Its worth spending cash on good quality case/psu/cooler and you don't need to replace them often, if at all.

Number one thing is CPU for longevity these days. The I5 4670K will last much more than five years for gaming and is only 200 euro

E.G the I5 2500K was realeased in 2010 and is still one of the best gaming CPU's you can get.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,512 ✭✭✭runawaybishop

The cpu isnt as important for gaming and the one you selected isn't overly expensive anyway. 800 euro for gfx cards is excessive though :)

We'll have to agree to disagree :)

Hey guys thanks for the replies I am at work at the moment so i cant really get a good look at the build yawhat posted but at a quick glance it looks brilliant with lotsa bang. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Bishop I would be interested to see the kind of machine for 800 you could build that would be similar to this.

One piece of advice(which I got here on boards.ie), buy the keyboard from an Irish or UK site as the ones from Hardwareversand.de come with a German layout.

I am ordering this in the next few days(seems to have good reviews)

R9 290 is a beast so a single one will last a long long time at 1080P
