2 x Penalty Points put €200 on my Insurance - beware

Juts advising other Boardsies of the facts.

Insurance renewal arrived today at €850 due to having added 20yr old daughter to policy last year and was happy with same. However - picked up 2 penalty points myself in December for doing 68 in a 60 zone and I rang them to update their file on same.

And my premium is now gone up to €1067.

Thought a bit steep - queried same with rep and advised that I will be ringing around and was there anything they could do on same....happy to pay €850 but not €1067. They said NO. So - beware that 2 points is costly on insurance. I had the impression that it would kick in on 4++ points-

So...off to a broker I go. Will update on any developments

Is this Aviva by any chance? I know they give me a discount for no points - I can't remember how much exactly, but it's not inconsequential.

Are you with liberty by a year chance? I heard a few people say they hiked up the insurance ridiculous amounts since they changed from Quinn.

Yeah I'm with Aviva who give 33% off for no penalty points. A lot of brokers will be the same I'd imagine. My advise, don't get penalty points! Or do one of those RoSPA type tests to bring your premium down again.

Most insurers will ignore 2 penalty points for rating purposes when you ring around. Not all, though, will be competitive with a 20yr old as a named driver.

Yeah, a broker would be your best bet

I think that nicety has all but disappeared now and anything out of the ordinary will incur extra charges.

My renewal with Chill for TPFT was €550, up over €100 from last year. Ended up getting fully comp from 123.ie for €510. I can't make sense of it at all. 29yo male, no points, 318Ci MSport.

Had 4 at one stage that had no affect on my premium. In saying that, Aviva are in the mood for losing customers. My premium went from 1,300 to 2,300 in the space of a year despite the loss of 2 points and gaining 1 year NCBs. Did not give a ****e. Axa were more than happy to insure me for 720.

Folks at Aviva must be gone mad

Is it that gender equalisation thing perhaps? Or was that two years back?

What obligation is there to tell the Insurance about carrying PPoints if they don't ask ?

Aviva are gouging everyone in all sectors as they dont want to be in Ireland any more and are extracating themselves by dissuading new business by quoting silly money.

For most insurers 2 points have little or no effect on premiums, take yourself and your business elsewhere. 123.ie has been the most competitive Ive seen for the last few years.

Meh. I'm with FBD. They consistently beat anyone like Aviva for a quote, and stay close enough to 123.ie keep me.

    Me with 2 points:
"Hi there. I just got your renewal letter and I wanted to inform you that I very recently acquired 2 penalty points for speeding. Can you give me an updated quote please?"
"There's no increase in premium. I'll make a note of the points on file but you can proceed with the quoted figure"
    "Cool, thanks"

    1 year later:
"Hi there. I just got your renewal letter and I wanted to inform you that I recently acquired another 2 penalty points. Making 4 in total. It was for speeding, again. Can you give me an updated quote please?"
"There's no increase in premium. It only starts to affect you if you have 6 points. I'll make a note of the extra 2 points on file, but you can proceed with the quoted figure"
    "Cool, thanks"

    So I'm making sure I don't get 6, there's 10 months left on my original 2.

When Insurance companies start messing with premiums, it's typically a balancing act. Like any other risk, they try to spread their potential exposure across various risk categories. All the while, the company needs to maintain cover for liabilities.

One insurance company aren't 'robbers' because they're more expensive in your category, it just means they don't want (or are overloaded with) drivers in your category.

For instance, when I first went for insurance nearly 7 years ago, FBD wouldn't even quote a driver with less than 2 years driving experience. They didn't want new learners out on their own. It doesn't mean FBD was closed for business. 2 years later, they took my now wife on, giving her a 50% discount despite never having Insurance in her own name. They were happy to count 5 years named driving (claim free) as 5 years NCB. Good eh? Well, they probably just wanted female drivers aged 27 or over on their books, so they were competitive.

I am with Liberty and 2 points made no difference to the renewal and the premium went down again the next year.

Interesting how different companies do it. No discount but 2 point buffer or discount and price raise with 2 points.

Just into my second year with 123.ie

Gained 2 penalty points a few months before renewal, rang them up after they sent me the renewal quote and the 2 points had no effect on the premium

It is worth shopping around alright as I saved a fair bit last year when i switched and this year again they were the cheapest of the quotes I received

Aviva have a built in discount in their premiums for having no PPs. If you have any you lose the discount and your premium goes up. Aviva, AXA,Quinn/Liberty were the best insurers for having younger drivers on your policy for years and because of this they have made losses due to targeting these risks so their overall premium has gone up too. Then if you are female the Gender Directive came in during December 2012 and that has had a huge impact on most female drivers especially under the age of 30. A lot of the January 2013 renewals didn't get affected by it as it had just come in to legislation so most of the people with a renewal in January are only feeling the pinch this year.

Regarding Aviva not wanting to be here that is a hilarious statement. They sponsor one of national stadiums do you think they do that to market their image better in the UK?

Agreed, recently changed two policies to Aviva. Both full comp at €280 (their minimum) :D

Not exactly the actions of a company trying to exit the market. But perhaps they are more interested in certain segments.

Renewal for misses with Aviva was Shocking last year too. I switched her to Liberty for half the price. I cant remember what Aviva wanted, but it was freaking stupid number.

Given the rate at which Penalty Points are being dished out, I am of the opinion that we have thousands of motorists who do not inform their insurers of their acquisition of points. Yes/No ?

Arnt they bringing in a central system where insurance companies will be able to just run your name see what points you have etc. ?

My premium went up from €700 to €2200 over a small claim I made for €300. Lesson learned. Paid the insurer back the €300 claim to squash it and regain my no claims bonus, went elsewhere and ended up with Allianz paying €1000

Crazy, I'm 25 driving an Opel Astra 1.4L, and my insurance went UP €300, with only difference me going 24-25 ....

As WildWater says, different insurance cos are interested in different risk profiles. Aviva do give 30% for an IAM license, which makes them competitive for me - this time around at least.
