ALU Insulated Security Shutters for residential?

Hi all. Couldnt make up my mind where to post this - so by all means move if someone finds another section more fitting.

    I was thinking of having external rolling security shutters fitted for two reasons;

    1. Security
    2. Insulation.

Anyone have any ideas how much benefit these would be in terms of insulation?

Also, anyone every considered or gone ahead with this?

I've made a preliminary enquiry to a company - will see what they come back with. In the meantime, I just wondered if they could be done in a way that they wouldnt look ridiculous! House is a standard run of the mill Semi-D (celtic tiger era). I guess I could come to the compromise of only having the back and side windows with shutters. Nobody would ever really see them there.

Any thoughts re. any questions I've raised above - or any other relevant info would be very gratefully received.

There's no insulation value to be achieved from Shutters. There not suitable for domestic installations as they are noisy in wind and would look unsightly on the House.
As to security, If you think you need them for security reasons then maybe you should be thinking of moving.
You might even become a target as thieves might think you have something worth stealing.

There's a company in Cherry Orchard ind est D10. who make a security lattice work type security screen for windows. They won't offer any insulation value but would look a lot better on the windows than roller shutters.

I lived on mainland europe previously - where there was far greater usage of these shutters in a residential scenario. A good friend of mine had a ground floor apartment in what was a new (and much sought after..) development at the time. He had a big patio door which had alu shutters fixed externally. Whilst I'm sure that it didn't look nasty, I can't recall any issue with noise from it - but then, it wouldn't be so windy in central europe. I can't recall also re. whether it was effective in terms of contributing towards energy (i.e. heat) conservation.

That said - if these shutters have at least a thin layer of insulation,.....assuming that they are sealed, then surely they have to have an affect on u values for windows/doors?

I agree that in the irish context, they may not look as if they are suited to a house. However, my plan was to have these installed on all the back windows and doors and the one bathroom window at the side. From a security standpoint, any break in is more likely to come from the back (although I accept this isn't exclusive). From an aesthetics viewpoint, my house is in a very small estate. Nobody really has a view from the back - and of course, most of the time, shutters would only be down at night time.

Any luck with your investigation? I'm having the same dilemma and not sure if security shutters will provide insulation. My back garden is exposed to soccer field and the wind is unreal. Therefore was thinking to install shutters for security reasons as well. If you had any luck please let me know.

I got a quote - which to do back door, a patio door and 4 windows - coming in at a few grand.

I'm not going to rush this. I going to take my sweet time - I want to see them in situ. Company I checked with do internal or external. I'm trying to envisage which would work best for aesthetics, cost, energy efficiency, etc.

What are your windows like? Mine are crap quality but new - so can't really justify pulling them out. However, if you could, then I came across a german company that actually build a shutter in to the window i.e. its all the one unit. Sounds like the way to go to me - would look a lot better - and still achieve all the other advantages.

I'm looking for 4 windows plus patio as well at cost of 1,500. Windows are new double glazed but due to the position of the house it creates draught. My main reson is insulation but recently couple break ins in our are brought the security element into the equation. May I ask which company you got your quote from and what's the name of the German masters??? Thanks

I've just PM'ed you that info. I don't want to put it up here as I believe its against forum rules to give publicity to individual companies.

    Hi All,

domestic roller shutters are very popular in the rest of Europe they are made from aluminium with nice and light design filled with insulation foam. I have them fitted in my house in Co.Wexford for the past 2 years and they are great for both security and thermal protection.

There is company in Co.Wexford which installing them nationwide.

Pm me if you need more information as I'm willing to recommend these guys :-)
