Hey in currently a first year general nursing student and I have started placement . I really hate it and I don't know what to do , I thought after some time it might settle down but it's Been four weeks now and I still don't like it.
Should I drop out ? I always enjoyed the lectures but I just cannot stand placement , I can't decide what it is exactly but I just hate it :(
Honestly I can't picture myself being a nurse and I want to leave.
I am only 17 so I he plenty of time , is it advisable to drop out so late on the year ?
I know it's only me that can decide but I'm so confused and I new help !
    Thanks :)

    Hi Lemonglasses

I am also a first year nursing student but I am an old fogie (nearly 13 years older than you!).

I think that you are at a critical point right now. You need to decide the reason why you chose nursing as a career path in the first place. What differs from what you imagined to the reality you are experiencing at the moment.

Is your current placement a standard placement or speciality? You need to remember that nursing is a very varied career, perhaps you are on a medical or surgical ward now, that does not mean that you have to work in that area forever. You could further your study and do midwifery, public health nursing, GP nursing, speciality nursing (palliative, tissue viability, diabetes etc), the list is very broad.

I feel that you should wait until you complete your second placement. It is very difficult to give a definitive decision after only first placement.

Make your decision carefully and trust your gut instinct, everything happens for a reason and live your life with no regrets xxx

Am in third year of nursing. Many in my class hated it in first year, and love it now. I'd say stick with it. Placement is so tough and so difficult to adjust to, and atm we're not being treated very well, but things get SO MUCH better after 1st yr. Also, from a fees point of view there's no benefit in dropping out now. Stick with it!
