Landrover Discovery or Audi q7.

I am thinking of buying a Landrover Discovery or a Audi q7, both jeeps are 2007 with approx 100k miles.

I had landcruiser before and was reliable but im looking a change.

Is the discovery as unreliable as i am lead to believe?

    Thanks.

A 2007 Disco will be the TDV6 model, which uses the Jaguar AJD-V6 2.7l unit. Proper, hard-as-nails bit of kit.

It depends, how serious an off roader are you?

I'd have a Q7 because Discos are just common round my way

Neither will touch a landcruiser for, reliability.

If fuel economy is a consideration go for the Audi. The Disco is a real guzzler.

Q7's are very reliable, mechanic friend has one! Drove a 2012 sline Q7 home from the UK a few months ago, pure comfort

The audi is 5k more for the same year and miles, both jeeps are well finished
    hse and s line.

If you don't do any off roading id go for the Q7. More economical and probably nicer to drive. Not much to choose between them in terms of looks imo.

It wouldn't bother some, but I would prefer the image of the Discovery over that of the Q7.

Have you driven each of them? You'll probably find one appeals a lot more to you since they are quite different.

If you're heavy offroad I wouldn't go for either. Landcruiser workmate V8 from around the 2007 mark are probably my favorite off-road vehicle but wouldn't be easy/cheap to get one into Ireland.

If you're never going off-road Q7. But I'm Audi biased so don't mind me.

For poncing about in the Q7 all day long, for doing work related activities the Landrover Discovery all day long.

What about a Merc ML? Classy lookin

The first sentence out of any Landrover owner's mouth that I ever met was "The only things that went wrong with mine were..."
I'd go for the Q7, they're one of the better built Audi's. Or find a Land Cruiser.

I'd do the same but he was asking about a Land Rover and a Q7. They're the two vehicles he wanted opinions on with are SUV's sort of. Not cars.

The Disco is a proper Jeep, A Q7 is a giant car driven purely for the image...

I fixed that for you, common problem here. . . .

The workmates are a far cry from being nice to drive in compared to a Discovery or Q7. Great for rugged off roading but no power windows, cloth seats, manual windows, no option for an auto gearbox & plastic flooring. Fantastic engine, loads of power and tough but not luxurious.

I've got an older 75 series Landcruiser so I'd still probably take the workmate over the other 2 any day.

    Discovery 3.
Great for off-roading. Better than the land-cruiser, when the going get's rough. (Check out reviews on YouTube)

Also Tow Car/ SUV of the year. better spec in HSE Disco aswell.

And it only weighs 2.5 tonnes, only twice the weight of a Focus!

I think the point is that off-road ability brings a lot of on-road downsides with it. It might be a necessary trade-off, but then again it might not be - that's really down to the needs/wants of the owner.

And it only weighs 2.5 tonnes, only twice the weight of a Focus!

Where is the comparison coming from?
A focus will not seat 7 in comfort
A focus will not tow anything near the Disco's capacity
A focus will not carry a palette or two of materials or a big fridge or 30 bags of turf or half a dozen hay bales or four or five bikes or a dozen surfboards etc
A focus will bring you up a mountainside, through muddy fields, through floods more than 6" deep
A focus will not allow drive down a country road and see over the hedges
A focus will not shrug off the daily abuse handed out by builders, farmers, tilers, plumbers, vets etc

Honestly, there is a market for someone who wants a focus and one for someone who wants / needs something bigger / stronger / more capable. Worth remembering / researching that a D3 length is about 4835mm, while a new focus is about 4534mm, it is not like the disco is taking up much more room on the road, similarly, the width of a D3 is 1915mm (excl mirrors, while a focus is 1823mm - again not much of a difference for the added functionality?

Plus, I would take my Disco (albeit a late series 2 model) for a drive EVERYTIME over a focus, personal choice. I am happy to pay the extra in insurance, tax, diesel etc, that is my choice.

Considering the OP had a Landcrusier I'm sure they are familiar with the downsides and upsides of a 4x4 both financially and with drive-ability and have based there current search with that in mind.

Likewise - Any extremes of weather (Snow, Rain) etc and the discovery keeps going no matter what.

That focus on the other hand parked up.

But when the Disco breaks down again... you need the Focus to go collect some new parts! :P

    We all be screwed then.
Disco broken down and focus trapped in by floods or snow.

In all seriously I don't think there that bad - used one for a few months and had no bother. Great 4x4, comfortable, smooth and lovely sound system.

Strange they never took of in Ireland - In the north and Mainland UK they are everywhere.

Top Gear even rates it above the Landcruiser - stating.

Toyota shouldn't have bother with the Landcruiser cause the Disco is invented and it's better both off and on road.

They might be, but they equally might not be aware of the gap in on-road ability between a Disco and a good car. Information is always good - they can always disregard it as they see fit. ;)

Ya, the Landcruiser is a bit of a lazy effort alright, bit too agricultural for the price. But worked in a quarry for a summer a whack of moons ago and they had both disco's and Landcruisers. The Disco's gave plenty of bother, mainly gearboxes and diffs. Landcruisers took abuse and rarely broke. All bought brand new and used similarly.

True. There is no best car, it's all down to what you need it for.

Get the Audi if you want some sort of reliability, but have your wallet full incase.

    They serve a purpose.
A brand new micra, polo, corsa is unfashionable throughout it's entire life.
