Van insurance question

I wanted to buy a van for personal use (moving sports equipment at weekend), few of us involved. Just rang 2 brokers who said they wouldnt be able to insure for that.
I dont get that, they said if we were a tradesman driving round all day theres no problem but they had no catetgory on their system that allowed private van insurance coverage.

Do I ring back, lie and say Im a carpenter?

Is there anyway in which your own job would need a van for any purpose?

Are you saying you cannot get personal insurance on a van or insurance just for the weekends? Because the latter is not possible in Ireland.

Not really, office work. I could ring up insurance company and tell them they did, but if I did that then I might as well ring and say Im a tradesman anyway (which Im not).

If there was ever an accident and it was the weekend, Id be concerned whether Id be covered.

The weekend thing doesnt really come into that much as Id use it midweek a bit more in the summer. Im saying I rang 2 brokers and both said they couldnt quote me based on what I told them I needed the van for.

Google shows companies for insuring a van privately.

Do I ring back, lie and say Im a carpenter?
    Don't do this. It's fraud.

what Im looking for is someone to say how I can insure a van for personal use. Legitimately.

edit: seen original post I was replying to was removed so Ive snipped comments..

Yeah, that'd be about right. Nearly all insurers will run a mile from any mention of "Van" and "Priviate car insurance" in the same breath. You could get a commercial policy and associate with some role like "General Trader With A Heavy Bias Towards Furniture".

if its use is for social and domestic then you shouldnt have any problems? if its for work then its commercial insurance.. ive gotten van insurance recently,a transfer.. no problem, since been quoted by nononsense aswell..

    Who you with now?

I know you say it's no problem, but I assure you both brokers said can't be done through them. They had no facility to quote for what I told them I needed the van for, ie occasional transport of non commercial goods.
    I'll try no nonsense.

No nonsense said "we don't insure vans"
    Even for personal use?
    We don't insure any vans.

They don't. But their owners FBD will. Just ring a broker, explain its for social domestic and pleasure use only. They do a quote on the computer and then approach the cheapest insurer to see if they will do it on the basis you sign a declaration noting it is only for SDP purposes. No problemo. Done it before years ago for clients.

A people carrier might be an option, fold-away or removable seats etc, once you're not using it for commercial purposes all should be fine IMO.

most places will try to insure it commercially ( & you will be paying private tax but thats the joys of this country )

if you already have a car you may have to take out a 2nd policy to insure the van ...

your best bet is to go to a broker who actually wants some business & they should be happy to help

Also . Insuremyvan would not quote me as it was not commercial insurance i was after..

Funny they dont say that on website or tv ads..
