Steering rack question.

First off, only asking for a friend so im not too clued in to the mechanics of cars, anyway, 07 Toyota corolla 1.4 d4d need steering rack changed, although my friend is no stranger around cars he is unsure if the ecu also needs to be replaced as the rack in the carolla is a different set up from the norm.
