BMW 5 Series door sealing fail on new car

Hi. I have a 6 month old BMW 5 Series car and the door seal is failing.

The garage says it's fair wear and tear caused by me rubbing against it as I enter and or exit the car. They say it's not a warranty issue.

The damage is in the form of a tear in the rubber and while it may correspond with me rubbing against it as I get in and out of the car I cannot accept that this is fair wear and tear. The repair cost is €230 and if it is fair wear and tear I will encounter this cost every 6 months or so..

Has anyone else had this problem?

How should I put this. Are you one of those that get into your car holding part of the top of the door frame or get out by pulling yourself using the a-frame section of the door frame.

I have never had a door seal fail quickly on any car but I know someone who managed to pull the seal loose on a mondeo by getting in and out as described above. He was a large rugger bugger type with huge frame, built like a tank and had to use the method above.

This is neither abusive or tongue in cheek so please do not see it that way.

Is it the seal on the body?

It's the seal on the body. The passenger one is failing too but not so badly.

The fail is a rip in the rubber seal.

If both are failing it is quite odd.
Unless as said earlier, you are doing something specific to damage both sides, I wouldnt be having this crap re normal wear and tear.

    Maybe try another dealer?

Is it the dealer you bought the car from?

These things tend to rip when people getting in and out rub against them. Either with their bodies, or stuff they carry along. Post a pic of its location.

I can see how a particular pattern of behaviour when getting into or out of the car might be a possible cause.

However, I have the (mis)fortune of owning a 20 year old well used commercial jeep, a 31 year old fiat and a 33 year old pickup and the seals are fine on all of them. I have seen perished seals and ripped seals but never a pattern of failure as you describe with the seals going on both sides.

If this is a common fault, it will be mentioned on brand owners club forums so google a bit and see what you find out. Also ask what you can do to avoid it happening again - it's a new car after all.
