So i took my pc apart yesterday to set it up on my desk while i cleaned my watercooling loop.I set the mobo up on my desk using the stock cooler, onboard gpu,psu and ssd.

I boot up to find my ssd not being recognized by the mobo.It had an error which suggested it was a fault between the sata controller and the ssd so i changed the sata cable but no joy.I also did the other usual stuff like check psu cables and clear the bios but still didn't work.

At this stage i presume the windows install is fubar so i tried an old hard drive i had and it started and let my do a fresh win 7 install on it.I got bored after few minutes so i stopped it the install (i'm to used to ssd speeds).
I formatted my ssd into the family pc and then connected back to my mobo.It would boot but kept restarting when it got to the windows logo during the install.

At this stage i think its the ssd thats borked but i tried it back in the family pc with a fresh windows install which worked fine with no problems.I'm now thinking it must be the sata controller on my mobo.
So i connect the ssd and the old hard drive to my mobo just to see if anything is different and it booted into windows
Then after a while it went back to rebooting as soon as i got to windows.

So just to rule my psu out i tried the family's one with my mobo.It booted fine into windows with no rebooting.I did a fresh install and all the updates just to be safe.It worked fine until i swapped back to my psu to double check if it was my psu causing the issues. It was,so grand i thought as psu is cheaper to replace than the mobo.

Oddly though when i use the good psu after testing with my bad one the fault reappears. After lots of restarts it just starts working again.I tried this a few times and it comes back for a while with the good psu until it just goes away randomly :confused:

I'm concerned that my mobo may have issues as well as the psu but i've no way to test it.

Anybody ever had any faults like this before?
Does it sound like just a psu fault even with it coming back after swapping the psu's?

Again sorry for such a long post but it took me 16 hours of testing to get this far..... :p

    Hows it going game4it,

I had a similar issue with a Crucial M4 SSD. Took it out to clean the cable sleeving & around it (I know..I know..) and could not see it in BIOS or device manager on a second PC when I connected it. Some Crucial drives have this bug, there is a power cycle method that usually works, it worked for me, so I upgraded the firmware & reinstalled windows and its been peachy since.

Give a look here, not sure what make your SSD is but maybe give it a try and defo upgrade your firmware.

    Hey Glyn,
    Thanks for the reply.

I actually tried that last night even though i didn't think it applied to me as the drive works fine on the family pc.It made no difference.Firmware is up to date also.
It might explain why the drive isn't picked up when i swap from bad to good psu's?

I might try using my psu for the 24pin and 8pin with the good psu powering the ssd and vice versa to see if anything shows up.

TBH not sure to me it sounds like a motherboard issue, but to rule out your mobo I suggest you could-and you probably have tried most already, but:
    • Update your mobo to the latest firmware.
    • Check the mobo manufacturers site for similar issues with your model board.
    • Try using a different SATA port for the SSD.
    • Check SATA port settings-enable AHCI etc
    .

    GL.

Update your mobo to the latest firmware.
It has dual bios and tried both with latest and older versions.
Check the mobo manufacturers site for similar issues with your model board.
Only found a older ssd firmware issue related to the mobo sata controller.I've the lastest ssd firmware.
Try using a different SATA port for the SSD.
It has 8 ports with two different sata controllers, all checked.
Check SATA port settings-enable AHCI etc
Tried every setting related to this.

Going to try using both psu's at once now.
    Thanks again.

Ok i tried using both psu's.
I tested my one with 12 fans hooked up using the same cable that has the sata power on it.
That worked so i connect it to the ssd leaving the fans connected to it.
When i try to boot with the good psu connected to 24 and 8 pins and the bad one just powering the fans and ssd all i get is a freeze at windows logo instead of a restart. Also tried with just my psu and got the restart again.

So to me it looks like when my psu draws a certain amount it will restart.I know when you hit the windows logo it will spike a little so that could be the cause.

The only thing that bothers me is as soon i go back to using the good psu it takes a good few restarts before the ssd shows up in the bios and boots properly.

I cant see any other ways to test so looks like i need to get a new psu and hope thats all thats wrong with it.

What wattage do i need to run this lot with a good bit of headroom for oc'ing?
    4670k.
    7970.
    SSD.
    4 sticks of DDR3.
    Pump.
Fan contoller with at least 12 fans.

I was looking at this one.

HardOCP slated that PSU, apparently sub par by corsair standards, cheap components etc. HX, TX CX and AX series all are good, maybe a CX750W for £75.30? For that kind of money you could pick up a decent 700W+ PSU.

Thanks,i liked the fact that the fan doesn't run on low loads.
I read that review on hardocp earlier but kinda ignored it as all the other reviews where decent enough :D

I think i'll have a look at the CXM 750w you linked.I need modular so thats good, just need to find out if its quiet.

    Thanks again.

I have a 600W Platimax that I'm thinking I might swap out. If you're interested, let me know.

Oddly enough the 650w is actually a completely different unit, that one is made by CWT, the other by Chicony Power whom I can't say I ever heard of.

The 650 has a better review on jonnyguru although I'd still reckon there is better out there for the money.

Just browsing through JG and I saw this, he was almost fapping over the Chicony Power made RM850, so perhaps HardOCP were a little harsh. After all Corsair did introduce a fix for the fans issue that caused it to fail (But HardOCP don't seem to have reviewed the unit again).
