    Hello,

I don't have satellite but my very elderly father in law does. Every few months I get the call to go down and fix the channels. I am able to do it but I don't understand why there has to be 14 ITV etc Loads of channels are in multiples.

    He uses Astra 1 Astra2A? and Astra3.

I only scan FTA. Should network scan be on/off?

And are the Sats I mentioned actually needed/the same? What ones are recommended. I think it is a 60cm dish. And it is a HD sat box.

He loves his foreign news, in english.

Thanks in advance. really sorry if this is all common stuff on the forum somewhere. I tried the FAQ. In dublin btw!

It's all the different regional variations. That's the downside of an FTA receiver. What model is it? You may be able to download a channel listing from your PC rather than doing it manually every time.

If he had a Freesat branded receiver you never have to retune, unless you want something that is not listed.

The satellite group that carries the UK channels (and Sky channels too) is Astra 2/Eutelsat located at 28.2°E. The 60cm dish is fine for Dublin, I installed one there for my sister a while ago.

When tuning a FTA satellite receiver I use the FTA option during a scan with network scan to off.

classix answered the question about the duplicate channels.

As classix posts above the hassle free/user-friendly option would be a Sky-like Freesat spec receiver, 7 day guide, all the well known free channels, auto updating of channels etc. and a recorder version is also available.

Freesat carries lots of english language news channels - BBC News/Parliament, Sky News, Euronews, CNN, Bloomberg, CNBC, Al Jazeera, France 24, Russia Today, CCTV News, NHK - http://www.freesat.co.uk/channels

Basic Freesat receivers start at about £50 with Freesat+ (twin-tuner recorder) from about £150 upwards like the Manhattan Plaza.
