I have a pup that was 6 months old at the start of January. She is an English setter. I am new to the shooting scene and was wondering would anyone have any tips on anything to do with her during the year before the next season. She is setting snipe and blackbirds no bother.

Well Springer Man, all you need to do for the early stages is to socialise the pup get him interacted with as many people and other dogs as you can.
Start to bond with him yourself.
His confidenece will begin to grow.
After a couple of months you could start introducing him to bit of game, maybe in feb, march.
Very little you can do until he starts hunting this could happen at 6 months, it could take 12 months.
If you want him retrieving, you could introduce a tennis ball now.
All you need do with setter is To train them on the stop whistle and return whistle.
Always work them into the wind, make sure they are working with head up, not nose down.
This can be done by working them on heather.
Dont ever shoot a bird over him unless he sets it.
I have a few books on pointer and setters that you can borrow.
    PM me for details.
Bond loads with him and no harm let him know who the boss is everynow and again.
    Best of luck.
Alot more on here that know more than me

good advice fitzy . also as he grows and you see his temperament you will know how fast or slow to go with him in regards training. simple recall should be good enough for the present and let him be the inquisitive baby that he is.

Exactly Charlie, depending on the dog. Training could start at 6 months or 12 months.

If you have a look at the above link, it is a synopsis of training a setter/pointer from a very experienced trialing man.
Alot of the advice would apply to a rough shooting setter.

you can't beat google, but have to say there isn't the same amount of info on the net for setters and pointers as there is for labs and springers.
