Replacing Vodafone DSL router

It's been a while since I worked in this end of things and I know how rapidly technology changes, so I just want a quick sanity check.

I have a Vodafone supplied HG556a on my line at home and I want to replace it. Can I just use any of the DSL devices such as this? The only "science bit" I can get from the HG556a is that the modulation type is ADSL2+ and I'm getting 7.6m download & 800k upload. Other than that I can't see any config.

Can I be reasonably confident that if I buy one of these yokes, lash it in and enter in whatever password I can extract from Vofadone that I would be up and running? Or has a whole world of complexity been added since I last had to deal with this and I'm stuck with Vodafone devices?

In terms of why I'm changing - the LAN connections on it seem to be a little, err, haunted. I've had problems on and off over the last while with devices not connecting (wired) and couldn't quite pin down what was happening. I had a device connected (permanently on) for a month or so without any issue and then suddenly the network connection just died. I rebooted, it came back up and then it dropped again after a couple of minutes. Then I connected it to a netgear switch and it stayed up for days. Connect it back to the HG556a and it dropped again after a couple of minutes. Wiring is the same - the only change is the netgear vs the HG556a. I've never come across something like this before and I don't have the will power to try to get Vodafone tech support to try to determine if it is a problem with the HG556a when I'm 99% sure it is.

So, can I just swap it out for any of the DSL devices on the shelves? And . . . can anyone recommend one in particular?

    Cheers,

    z

I swap mine regular enough with no issues. I used an eircom issued Netopia router until a year ago when I got a TP link in Argos. It seems to have given up now though and I'm using the hg556! the set up can vary though you do seem to have to enter the user name vodafone and the password broadband.
