The point about Sunshine's easy-listening music has been made many times in the past (including by me!). I have learnt since that their license is for a mix of country, easy-listening and Irish music, so they had themselves covered. I always felt that 106.8 were more enthusiastic about easy-listening than the official license holder for that specific genre - Q102 (originally called Lite FM).

I was interested to see that Nova's Kevin Brannigan is involved with Sunshine. He also is involved with 4FM. Sean Ashmore is CEO of both Sunshine and 4FM and is also an overnight presenter on Nova.

By the way, I am very amused at Keith Shanley doing a survey of Sunshine's music policy for Country FM. He used to be presenter of the breakfast show on Dublin's Country Mix/Sunshine 106.8 himself!

One of the people behind Country FM is Martin Block. He was the original CEO of Lite FM, when it was more obviously an easy-listening station than now as Q102. He was also the original CEO of 4FM.

It was a complete joke what they were allowed to do with the license over the years. You swear it was a pub and that they could just change the name and move on.
There was a viable pirate running very successfully in Dublin prior to the launch of 106.8 called KIC Fm. It played the right music to its genre. The problem with Dublin's Country was it didn't appeal to the hardened country music listener because it played the wrong type of country music as described in the article. There's plenty of room for some type of country music format station. I know one hospital station which has a favourable audience for its country and irish music output from 10pm to 6am each night.

If Dublin's Starsunshinecountrymix106.8FM swallowed their middle class pride, gave two fingers to the rain checkers in ad agencies and just played Country+Irish from day one they'd have actually done quite well. Playing what they do nowadays, they sound like a watered down version of 4FM and yet the agencies won't touch them.

I think they have ... you don't hear that many agency placed ads on Sunshine (well not last time I tuned in anyway). It's nearly all local business using the NRS sales approach.
