Do we need to be that sheltered???

Sometimes I like to watch a movie with the subtitles on (kids in bed etc)

They have almost every swear word edited to something ridiculous in the subtitles, as if we irish darent read a swear word ffs.

And as for that scene with patsy kensits Falluja

    WE CAN HANDLE IT RTE.

Hang on. So you can hear the "offending word" being said in the dialog, but you can't read it written down in the subtitles? Yikes, we gotta lot of touchy deaf people in Ireland!

One of a thousand reasons I haven't watched ITV/UTV in 20 something years was their dubbing out of lines they didn't like in movies. But they did it to the extent that it made the entire scene baffling.
    For example:
Eddie Murphy - Stop talking such foolish nonsense you silly man!
Dan Aykroyd - How dare you speak to me using such filthy language, sir!

I seem to recall years and years ago that they censored a De Niro movie for TV and replaced every fuck with 'fun'. Might have been Midnight Run. Must see if I can track it down.

I remember my first time seeing a f**k on TV, it was Christmas night 1992, there was a film on ITV called Youngblood (haven't seen it anywhere before or since) that went out completely uncut.

Young wans today don't know they are living.

Christmas day? The censors probably had the day off for mass. By coincidence it was also Christmas day the first time I heard the (ahem) "C word" on telly.

    Glengarry Glen Ross:
Al Pacino to Kevin Spacey - "You stupid fcukin' cnut!"

I remember seeing Robocop uncut for the first time and being amazed at how much had been cut out, ITV were notorious for it, Predator was cut to ribbons too.

ITV used to put the 10pm news in the middle of the movie which went on for 35-40 mins! By which time you'd have lost interest or forgot what you were watching...

Never saw the skeletons in the room in The Shining until I got it on dvd.

Fcuks sake ,RTE even edited out the ould wan with the mouldy fanny.

    Ah ITV.
I remember them showing 48hours and every time it stopped for ads the title screen they showed was the movie poster, except they had airbrushed out Eddie Murphy's middle finger!

RTE used to do it too with the Thursday night movie (not sure if it still happens, don't watch much RTE these days thankfully). It was especially annoying if there was only 20 minutes or so left.

    Oh shoot :)

Yeh they cut films not just because of "inappropriate scenes", it was also to cut it in length so as to fit into their schedules. Talk about muerder of classics :)
