I've been having problems connecting my laptop up to the Eircom router while other devices in the house connect without any problems. I contacted the technical support staff today and one person told me to google a hotfix and download that. Does that sound correct to people here? It was almost the first thing he said when I explained what the basic problem was.

It's quite vague to be honest, what's the wireless problems you are having? What Eircom router are you using and what are you trying to connect with?

I'm completely terrible with computers so bear with me...

My laptop will only connect to the internet using the cable from the router itself. Whenever I try to use the wireless connection, it says there's an IP address conflict. I've tried changing the address but nothing works. It's a Zyxel D1000 modem.

Its possible your laptop has it's IP address manually assigned, try removing the old wireless profile, set TCP/IP to automatic and reconnect.

    1. Press the WIN key + R and you will see the Run command on the bottom left.
    2. Type in ncpa.cpl and press Enter or click OK.
    3. Right click the Wireless Connection and then click Properties.
    4. Under the Networking tab, click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Properties.
    5. Make sure Obtain an IP Addres Automatically and Obtain DNS Server Automatically are both checked and press OK.
    6. Now reconnect to your wireless network.

I tried Advertsfox's suggestion for manually changing the IP address but it hasn't made a difference, unfortunately.

And yes, I am using Vista.

Well I have the SP2 version and I tried the hotfix download but it says something along the lines of "this does not apply to your system". I'm at a loss as to what to do next!

is it fully up to date? another option is to log on to the modem and change the security from wpa2 to wpa

if it is an atheros AR5007EG i have a working vista driver i can link for download

this will work with WPA2-PSK wifi networks (this driver was written by Atheros) i have an old laptop with this wifi chip on vista it will work on both the eircom d1000 & f1000 routers

you can get it here https://www.dropbox.com/s/k4gk0ts56s94djm/vista-7.7.0.498-whql.zip

to install it unzip the file to c:\wifi

then go to control panel > system > device manager > network adapters

select the atheros AR5007eg wifi adapter and right click on it and properties

choose to update driver and to search manually for the driver and browse to the folder c:\wifi\vista 32 or vista 64 depending on which version of vista you have.

it will update the driver and you can now connect to your wpa2=psk encrypted wifi network

I did what you said Anotherposter and now the laptop connects up perfectly with the router! You saved me from spending hours dealing with Eircom reps so a big thank you! To say I appreciate it is an understatement!
