I'm torn between three cameras and just can't choose. I am just looking for an entry level camera. I hope to use it for some sports photography as well as general stuff. These are the options:

    Nikon D3200
    Canon 100D
    Canon 600D

    Any advice?

600D, just go and buy it and stop stressing. It won't make much of a difference anyway.

I'd recommend Canon as well, and of the two the 100D looks too small, so go for 600D

For sports, you might need a high burst rate, I think the 600D is around 3.5fps. Would you consider a second hand 60D which does around 5, or even a 40D with around 6.5?

Also remember that you will need a long lens, 200mm +. Have you considered this too?

i have both a 40D and a 600D. If its just for sports then get the 40D but for overall id get the 600D

Excellent thanks so much folks. Looks like general consensus is to go for the 600D. I am looking at getting a 75-300m lens as well with it, unfortunately on the cheaper end of things but it should do to get me started for now! Thanks everyone!

If you can stretch to a 70-200f4L secondhand (~€400) it is much, much better.

Looking at a package deal abroad for the extra lens so it is working within budget. When I am ready to upgrade I'll definitely look at getting something like that second hand.

what fits best in your hand? What are you looking for exactly?

My GF has the 100D and it's super light, but too small for my average sized hands. I could get buy, but I opted for the 700D which is heavier but sits right in my hands... and i'm a man and not a little girl. :P

Go put each one in your hands and concider a Fuji X-pro, too.

Isn't it about three times the price though?
I find a lot of beginners want an SLR type camera. They usually aren't interested in something like the X-Pro or X-100 as they don't look like an SLR.

    I have a 600D, I like it.
It's gotta a video mode which can be useful and you can use magiclantern on it which gives you tons of extra features.

To be honest you can't go wrong with any new DSLRs. We have reached a point where sensor resolution has outmatched lens resolution so a good lens matters more than a good camera. Saying that some cameras have better low light performance and dynamic range than others. Like the Canon 5D3 and 6D have incredible low light, high ISO performance. Nikon cameras tend to have more dynamic range than Canon cameras due to the Sony sensors they use. And Canon cameras have better video capabilites than Nikon cameras as Canon cameras record video at a much higher bitrate than Nikon cameras (though on the downside this also means canon's video files are much larger too). And finally there's magiclantern (http://www.magiclantern.fm/) which is a 3rd party firmware for Canon cameras that adds a tons of features to the camera which can be very useful, especially when shooting video.

Anyway ultimately photography is an art and like all art it's the content that matters more than the equipment. Think of your camera as just a tool. Buying an expensive camera won't make you a better photographer, it'll just give you more things to play around with. You can take amazing images with your iphone too. What a DSLR gives you is greater control over your photographic process and part of the skill is learning to take control of your images. Not letting the camera decide what's the best image (because the camera is just a computer and computers lack artistic skill) but you deciding what's the best way you can take the particular picture. So really it doesn't matter what camera you pick. You won't go wrong with either of them. The skill isn't about learning how to use a fancy camera (although it helps greatly when you know how to work the camera the way you want it to) but the skill lies in how to take a good image which is something you'll learn through practice, time, dedication and hardwork!

I wouldn't call it incredible to be honest. It's not bad, maybe compared to other cameras, but it's not incredible.

If he wants to do Sport then X-PRO1 is not the way to go. Although the new Fuji announce today the X-T1 looks like it could work for Sports.

I'd say go for a Pentax k5IIs or any K5 model for that matter. Bang for buck I think you get more value with Pentax.

Is there much memory on the 600D? Or could someone reccomend a good SD card suitable for it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 138 ✭✭Alltherage

I think it's got a buffer for 6 shots in RAW, Just looking at prices I'm going say the Lexar 400x cards look to hit the bang/buck sweet spot.

    http://www.amazon.de/Lexar-Professional-Class-UHS-1-Speicherkarte/dp/B006YAOPLK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1391087235&sr=8-1&keywords=lexar+400x

If you're not worried about the buffer / don't shoot in continuous then write speed isn't an issue and you can get cheaper cards. You'll kick yourself if you try to shoot sport with a slow card though.
