Given the current turmoil in the NH's club set-up I just wondering does anyone think that some of the recent player signing in the Celtic Nations have made provisions in their contracts that would allow them leave if top level rugby isn't on the table next year?

ye if there isn't any European Rugby or if the Rabo turns into a bit of a farce if there isn't any 'proper' Welsh clubs in it

Nah. Can't see the IRFU being able to guarantee anything. People think the European situation is all doom and gloom, but me personally? I see a repeat of 1999. The want of more business will prompt all sides to come to a conclusion, it might just take longer than expected.

Possibly, or else maybe the framework for a deal on all of this is in place. if you think about it the bulk of the contracts have only been agreed in the last week (SOB, POC, Earls, Heaslip, AWJ in Wales).

I'm going to be optimistic on this and say we'll have a HEC, albeit with 20 teams and a Pro 12 next season and it will be bigger and better than ever with fewer weak teams in the HEC and more competitive games in the Pro 12 with tighter HEC qualification criteria and we'll have all our big names beating the crap out of each other for 9 months!

    It's gonna be great!

As far as I can see all the risk is on the employer's side, they'd only be too willing to let players go in that instance, players on the other hand may want a pay off.

In Ireland the employer generates <18% of their revenue from the competitions in question, so are not going to be desperate to offload playing resources if that portion of their income declined somewhat, they would make cuts in other areas first.

There's not much risk for them, and in nations with private ownership they're deriving even more of their revenue from other sources. And if they were in a position where they needed to offload staff, it would start at the fringes.

As for the OP, I don't think any union or club would allow themselves to sign such a clause.

less work for the same wage, sounds ideal in some ways!

That's actually an interesting point. Do we, as fans, over rate top level club rugby? I mean, do the players really care? Surely their security and pay come first. That's why so many of then look seriously at offers from French clubs. Did Sexton think Racing were gonna win the hcup this year? Was he even sure they'd be competing in it? I'd say he's more realistic than that.

Then the other question is... Does top level rugby actually help our players? We seem to think it does, but aside from 09 we've never really transferred it onto the international window. Yet Wales , who have players coasting through club games, and often disinterested even in the hcup , have dominated the 6n in recent years.

Very difficult to quantify it, but I imagine the more money that one gets paid the less they care. It's replicated across the financial sphere. They become detached, premiership football and top level of the banking industry are examples.
