I can't contain my excitement anymore! Flying out tomorrow to Saalbach for a week so I'm starting a Saalbach-Hinterglemm thread to update with information and pics (provided the Apres Ski doesn't get to me!).

Going DIY so the apartment was booked in the summer, flights with Ryanair and taxi transfer booked online.

Snow is finally looking good after a couple of snow falls this week so here's hoping for some good skiing :)

Great resort, one of my favourite.
Great day out is to do the entire circuit, ie both sides of the valley plus the trip over to Leogang.

I'll try and keep the thread updated, i've been 5 or 6 times before so the Hinterhag is the first stop for Apres Ski :)

I'll get some pictures up of conditions every day, it's snowed today so I'm hoping it has improved a lot. The last couple of years there at the end of January have been excellent in terms of snow cover.

I'll have to keep an eye on this thread, Saalbach is one the big Austrian resorts I'd like to visit some year. Seems similar to Mayrhofen albeit a bit more expensive.
Have a great time and enjoy all the fresh snow.

TBH Ive been to both, While I enjoyed Mayrhofen alot, Saalbach is far better, plus ski in / ski out! IMO its a little more expensive as it has proper alpine huts / apres ski bars etc, not the canteen style ones in Mayrhofen, plus the town is nicer..

They are both good places but Saalbach is a good bit better all round :D

It was the price of accommodation that put me off, the group I go with are a bit thrifty :pac:

Do you go with a travel agents?

As we do everything direct ourselves (its very simple) and get a 10/12 day holiday the same price as it cost for one week with Crystal ski.

    just an idea :o

No just book direct with whichever tour op is giving the beat deal. As the group gets smaller though doing a DIY trip is looking like a better option.

Hey cocker5, I'm interested in what you're saying here as I'm looking into a few alternatives (to Mayrhofen) for next year.

First - what exactly do you mean by the "canteen style" you referred to earlier?

And, what is the town like for eating out etc in the evening?

    Hi there,

Ok firstly have u been to Austria before? If so which one?

The careen I referred to is the style of mountain huts in many parts of mayerfophen , newly built , concrete buildings where you get ur food kinda like a school dinner kinda thing..

Whereas in the last 5 resorts I've been to they have Austrian style wooden huts all over the mountain , I just much perfer the style and atmosphere of them that's all, usually the food is a little better too.

Now that's not to say mayerfophen isn't nice I just prefer a more traditional alpine town and huts.

Ill post u some pics tomorrow and ill show u what I mean ;)

Cheers for that. Yep I'm pretty familiar with Austria and I get what you mean about Mayrhofen now - there are for sure some places like you describe although there are some super spots as well (Tappenalm just a bit down the blue 8 for anyone who knows).

We were in Zell am See last year and the eateries up the mountain would probably be better - more in the alpine style you're describing - but the town is a bit limited in the evenings. People in our group have been all over Italy, France and Austria, but we haven't been everywhere and we're just giving a bit of thought to trying somewhere new next year - and Saalbach is on the list. Within the group we have people who've been to each of Kitzbuhel, St Anton & Ischgl and are putting their tuppence worth behind them, so I'm just interested in recommendations for places none of us have been and Saalbach is such a place.

Thanks for the insight and it would be great to see your snaps when you put them up.
