    Hi all,

Any idea where a database of Irish cars and their registration plates can be found ? I want to incorporate a search feature for users in my website !

Just like micksgarage, for example, I can enter my reg, it shows my exact car type and I can look for parts for my car. I'm not looking for ownership details just the reg to match the type of car.

    Thanks in advance,
    Mark.

I don't believe you will get access to the National Vehicle and Driver File (NVDF) data just for some little side project you want to run. There are data protection issues around the data and it is controlled by The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport. The easiest thing you can do is just ask Cartell or whatever if it would be all right to scrape details from their site since it's public, they might even provide you with an API endpoint for doing so.

    See: http://www.cartell.ie/about-us/integrate-with-cartell/

Hi Touching, the project is substantial, the site is registered to a well est'd 30 year old nationwide business expanding onto an online platform.

But thanks for repeating the content of an earlier post.

    Hi mardall,

As TouchingVirus mentioned, access is fairly restricted. Also, I would say there is a fee for limited access you would require.
    Access to NVDF Records
    Section 60 of the Finance Act (No. 13 of 1993) as amended provides for access to NVDF data by Government Departments, and licensing (motor tax) authorities in Ireland and other member states of the EU, the Revenue Commissioners, An Garda Síochána and such other persons as may be prescribed in regulations (most recently S.I. No. 382 of 2009) by the Minister for Transport. Other recipients obtain NVDF data through their own specific legislative frameworks. There are also arrangements in place to supply non-personal vehicle data under agreement to a number of recipients who provide commercial services around vehicle identity checks to the general public. Recipients of NVDF data include;
    • E-Flow, who administer toll charges on the M50. Enquiries concerning eFlow, barrier free tolling or toll charges should be made to 1890 501050. Further information can also be got at www.eflow.ie.
    • Applus+ who operate the national car testing service. All matters relating to the administration and day-to-day operation of the car testing service including the issuing of test reminders is a matter for Applus+. Enquiries about booking a National Car Test should be made to 1890 412413. Further information can also be got at www.ncts.ie.

Thanks for that response, you really are making this difficult on people trying to help you out.

I told you where the data comes from - the NVDF. A quick google will bring you to this page telling you more about it. You can see there that they will provide certain third parties access to the data. You may fit the bill, talk to them.

It was suggested that you could direct users to Cartell, that is not what I suggested. I suggested you scrape their data, you use Cartell as a service in the background to get the data you need and display it on your own site. I then edited my post to direct you to the page on the Cartell site that talks about how you can integrate with their API. Pass that on to your web developer, they'll know what to do with it if you don't.

Your original post forgot to mention you're in a commercial enterprise, so kudos to you on your vagueness. For future posts, a little more gratitude when you're clueless wouldn't go awry

    Hi Drake,

Thanks for that. I realise there may be a fee - this isn't a problem. We are a few months away from launching the site ( we already have one operating in the UK ) but we have yet to incorporate a search feature like this in either site.

It would be useful to a customer I think.

    Anyway, thanks again.

    Hi Mardall,

As mentioned above Cartell are probably your best bet for something like this.

What kind of data is it that you need returned? For what type of site?

Will make a difference on whether Cartell will provide I'd say.

I did a quick google for 'ireland vehicle database api' which seemed to yeild some useful info - possibly take a look at the results there.

Interestingly one of the results is a previous boards thread on the subject:

I don't. Some Touchy people are very condescending right from the outset.

Glad to see you acknowledge other posters, many of whom just reiterated what I said in my first post. You can drop your animosity at any point, I was happy to help and now you're just being childish. Good luck with the online business.
