KVM issues - not sure if s/w or h/w

I bought a cheap 2-way VGA/USB KVM to share a monitor, keyboard and mouse between windows and ubuntu machines. The ubuntu machine shows up on the monitor at boot time, until X starts, and then I lose signal (no vga cable). Toggling the KVM or power cycling the monitor won't work, but if I boot connected directly to the monitor, and then hook up the kvm after it has booted, the display is detected fine.

I'm just wondering whether the KVM is a dud, or if there's any software utility or keyboard shortcut that might help to "re-negotiate" between the machine and the KVM?

I use synergy, works over your network. I dont know will it suit your needs, but its an option. (after x kicks in :) )

Thanks - it might still be a solution. I have another crappy monitor, so I might try that. I like the sharing functionality it gives.

Stuxnet - that worked a treat. I'm boxing up the KVM and sending it back.

    Sweet,

Glad it worked out for you :)

Great little piece of software, well worth a small donation for pro version, I threw him a few bucks.
