Gift receipt query

    Hi guys... This might have been asked before, but a quick search didn't reveal, so here goes.
    I got a jumper for Christmas, bought by my mother from a well known sports chain. I got the gift receipt. It was the wrong size.
    Unfortunately, I went to return it, but they didn't have the correct size, so I went to get something else. I was told that because the item was now on sale, I could only have the sale value applied to an exchange/credit note. If I had the actual full receipt, they would give full value.

    There was a difference of about €20, and my mam was with me. She happened to have the proper receipt, so it was no big deal, but was just wondering is this common practise?

    That's absolutly unacceptable. The gift receipt corresponds in their system to the full receipt which shows the value paid. You are entitled to the full price refund that you paid, not what it currently costs.

    Actually - it's a change of mind, so they can set the rules and apply them as they want. This practice isn't unheard of, even when someone returns with a full receipt.

    I should probably clarify that i was referring in general terms to gift receipts where a refund is valid, not for change of mind where the shop isn't obligated to do anything.

    Yes. That's what I thought. I understand that for a change of mind, I'm not actually entitled to anything, but it seems like a bit of a scam the way they do it!

    It's incorrect that the shop are not obliged to do anything. They are not obliged to provide for change of mind by statute, but where they do provide for it, they are bound by it under common law contract. Furthermore providing a gift receipt and then only offering a partial exchange would in my view fall foul of the unfair contract terms regs, but good luck enforcing that on such a small amount. Either way absolutely shocking service.

    ~This was always the case with gift receipts, could never under stand it.

    Just get the real receipt and put it in a sealed envelope and give it to the person, end of problem, they'd only open it if they needed it.

    To be fair I agree with your sentiments ref the envelope, gift receipts to me seem pointless. That said I've worked for two retailer that scanned the bar-code on the receipt and presto the amount the customer paid popped up on out tills, no idea why other retailers can't do this.

    I didnt realise that, I always thought you only got lowest selling value as an exchange with a gift receipt.

    Did you give refunds or exchanges?

    Generally exchanges, refunds went against my figures so :)

    During the first two weeks of January we'd generally do exchanges without receipts and if the person was nice we'd do exchanges without receipts all year round with a bit of discretion. To be fair if there was no receipt we tended to go with what ever value was on the till at that point.
