Unbelievable.. How is it possible that Dubai seems to be able to come up with these sort of results year in, year out. 13.46 for 5k! If that's even close to being true, better pacing could have resulted in a 2:03:xx

And his second 5k in 15:22. Big change in pace.

    And 18 Ethiopian years...

Yeah not meaning to sound like a prick but you would want to take his age with a large pinch of salt. Regardless, not a bad debut. Hope this is not giving ecoli any ideas ;)

He ran a recorded Sb of 29:33 for 10k last year, and ran 29:04 for the first 10k in the marathon He may have run a quicker unrecorded 10k last year, but that's still crazy .

I hate it when someone beats my best time in their first outing, hate it. Friend of mine did a 3.20 in his first, the DCM, and was annoyed with him.

He'll prob hav trouble running 2:03 now though, so you can beat that yet.

The highest prize money in the sport combined with a flat course and usually excellent running conditions can do that.

Suddenly my training has a whole new focus!

General formula for East African runners is: Given age + 25%

    No way is he 18!

Guess Geb and Lagat's recent runs are even better than we are to believe.

What ever about the age 2.04.32 is great running especially after the half pacing interested to see what he will do in next few years with a few marathons under his belt and better pacing.

Dubai is becoming the place to debut for most Ethiopians alright. The organisers have done everything in their power to make this the fastest course on the planet (IIRC this year had a slight course change to help that also, though this could have been last year). I don't think it will ever attract the top names in the sport however, I see it as more of a place for newer marathoners to put down a fast time to allow them to command a higher appearance fee in the Majors.

Definitely going to try this in my next attempt at 42.2............

".....and just before 36km Mekonnen found himself all alone thanks to a re-injection of pace and a 2:49 km.......

Yes, that bit I understand obviously. It's more the fact that for the past 3 years on the trot, its fairly unknown debutants that have ran 2:04:xx that is amazing. And, that with the huge prize money available, more of the top table runners don't run there.

Reading between the lines, I think that you are either suggesting that the course is short, or that the race organisers are loaning the runners bicycles for the first few kilometers. Which is it? :)
