Glasses prices

Apologies if this has been asked before, I did have a look through the forum and couldn't find anything recent.

Does anyone know what the current medical card payment for glasses is? I'm asking as I went to my opticians today who told me that the HSE pay for the test and the lenses but nothing towards the frames. Last time I got glasses with the medical card I thought most frames were free (it was a while ago!).

    Thanks in advance

Not sure how it works with medical cards but Specsavers do have offers for medical card holders.

I should have added that I know specsavers have deals but I had the eye test already so don't think I can change.

Does anyone know if it only covers lenses and the test or if there is money off the frame?

    Thanks.

There are certain frames that should be free. If you pick anything outside of this range you get an allowance off the total cost.

The majority of shops not just specsavers will have a range of frames and lenses that are free of charge with the medical card. If you wish to go for a more expensive frame it's about €42 off the cost for single vision and €84 for bifocal or varifocal.

You can move to a different optician with your medical card too. You will have to apply for a dispense only authorisation with the other optician first. Price around get the best deal for you and apply for the dispense only then with that opticians shop.
