I didnt have a 505 dangle but I did have a 505 turbo diesel estate which was full of character and soul. Went for ages and ages but wasnt quick in any sense but gave you the feeling that it would go for ever.

I had one of them as well, back in 1998, fabulous car, way bigger than the S124 I had up till then. One of a handful of cars I seriously regret selling, ended up as a Bush Taxi in the Ivory Coast.

Them , and the Citroen estates, 7 seaters before the 'people carrier' came alone ( have to mention Volvos as well ).

Read a book, My Mercedes is Not for Sale, http://www.amazon.com/Mercedes-Not-Sale-Ouagadougou-Auto-Misadventure/dp/0767928695 about those people who'd drive stuff to Africa, sell it and fly home. Still a bit of it going on  http://www.city-data.com/forum/africa/541661-europeans-driving-cars-sell-africa.html

I lived in West Africa for 8 years, I drove down through the Sahara about 35 times in total, including time when I lived there and when I just did it for a holiday. It used to be a good laugh, an "adventure", and yes you could sell cars at a decent profit but that's all over now. Still worth a road trip and a good way of getting some expenses back. More exciting than flying down anyway.

I got to know a few lads (mostly German) who used to drive to the Middle East, Afghanistan and Nepal in the 70's and 80's, but that's finished as well as a trip.

tried to go to Afghanistan about 4 years ago but parts of it were too unstable, though I understand it's possible to sell a car relatively hassle free in some of the Central Asian republics.

Matra-Simca Bagheera for me, thanks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matra_Bagheera

There used to one of those in Galway in the late 70's, in yellow.

And 2x of those Ranchos. Wtf are they now, that's the question........

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
