Is it wise to continue driving a car
with a stretched timing chain even for
    short journeys?

Depends on a few variables but generally - no, don't drive it.
Is there a reason you're asking?

My own car has been diagnosed as having
    this problem.

Right, an 01 Almera. Off to the breakers yard then!

You may want to get a second opinion before you scrap it.

Timing chain on my 01 W210k snapped 3 wks ago on motorway. Engine wipeout. No indication beforehand. 110k miles only. Just one of those things I guess.

if the car has an nct ,why wud u scrap it? 300/350 max to replace chain inc labour. seems a waste of a good car if thats all thats wrong with it.
there is thousands of them on the road running perfect!

Cost me 650 euro 2 years in my local Nissan garage. What are you being quoted op.

You wouldn't be bringing a 01 almera to a Nissan garage to get it done. Any good independent garage would be able to do the work for lower labour cost.

I was quoted 650 for a replacement timing chain for a V6 Maxima from a Nissan dealer.

I'm sure an almera could be done cheaper at a independent garage.

I've had three quotes from independent
garages ranging in price from 550 to 700.

    :eek::eek::eek:

Sounds expensive. What is the cost breakdown - parts / labour cost?

I got timing chain fixed in my yaris last year for 330 pound so just under 400 euro. those quotes seem expensive

There is a fair amount of stripping involved but a fairly handy job. Only the chain needs replacing, no guides or tensioner.

Nissan give 4.5 hours to do them but I've done them in less than 3.

Whatever you do, DO NOT get a spurious chain fitted, they don't last, genuine parts only.

Stay away from main dealer and go to a reputable independent garage.
