Is there any issue with the manual gearboxes in these how would failure of the dual mass flywheel manifest itself in day-to-day driving? Engine noise has reported as being louder than normal.

Don't think they have a DMF.

I don't think patrols really suffer from dual mass flywheel issues.
I'd be more worried about the engine stretching its timing chain, unless vw have updated the design.

Would a stretch in the timing chain account for the louder engine noise? Timing chain issues on BMW is a rattle..what's the tell tale sign on the Passat? It's a 2008 model

That one didn't suffer from that iirc as it was only the 170 BHP model and it has a DMF but would last longer than the diesel equivalent.

You will pick them up for handy money now.

They're direct injection, so they're louder and sound more diesely than a regular petrol engine at idle. If they're working right you'd only notice if you were really paying attention, as they're only a fraction less refined sounding than a regular model. No reliability issues with the TSI Passat (other than those caused by not servicing them on time), only the twincharger models suffer from timing chain issues but these were not available in the Passat.

It's not isolated to the 170bhp engine.
