Boardman Carbon Frame - new groupset and wheels

My SRAM Rival shifter has broken and the derailleurs have had a few years wear and tear. Also, one of the wheels is bent beyond repair.

Is it worthwhile purchasing a new groupset and wheels for such a frame - I can get Shimano 105 5700 new for €350 and Mavic Aksium wheels with tyres for €190. Add €100 for fitting to that and it'd cost €640.

Some work colleagues are saying that I'd be better just getting a new bike but €640 would result in a carbon bike, fully equipped with 105 and a reasonably good wheelset.

Double that would purchase a Planet X partially equipped with Ultegra but I'm not sure it's worth the extra.

If I wanted to sell my current bike, I'd need (at a minimum) to replace the wheel, shifter and rear derailleur.

    Depends on the frame.

I did something similar year ago with a old trek 1000, 105 + aksiums. It was a good investment, but I really liked the frame, it had a good feel.

"Shimano 105 5700 new for €350" that sounds very cheap?

Edit: I see it's a boardman carbon. I saw new groupset and wheels. Will be worth a lot more than 640 afterwards. Boardmans are a nice setup

    http://www.merlincycles.com/shimano-105-5700-groupset-sale-66608.html

The above website sells it for £299.99 and I have a TopCashBack account that gives 3.03% cashback.

You will probably be able to sell on some of the items from your old groupset also

The remaining good Rival shifter - €30 ish
    Rival FD - €10
Crankset - €50 depending on condition
Brakeset - €20 for the pair
    Sram Cassette - €10
Front Wheel and tyre - €30

So there's another €150 or so to set off against your costs. It all adds up.

If you like the frame then your proposed upgrades will keep you going for another good few seasons and you could can also easily re-sell the new parts you purchase in the future without making a huge loss on them. I would say the upgrade is a good investment.

For that budget I think I'd be buying a second hand aluminium bike with at least 105 group set and transferring everything over then swapping your own group set on to it and selling it again

Sounds like a good deal, I'd just recommend factoring in new cables (if not included), tyres & bar tape which will give the bike a brand new feel. Although tyres wouldn't be a high priority. If your happy with frame then I'd go for it....

The derailleurs are durable and should last, say 50k km or more and I wouldn't worry about them.
Best thing is to get a decent set of wheels. If you buy a new bike, you would have to spend a lot of money (probably over €2k, if buying new) to get good wheels with the bike.
And replace the shifter only. Is it the right or left shifter? I actually have both that I do not use, the right hand one is brand new, never installed on the bike. I personally find the Sram system a lot nicer to Shimano.
