    Hi there,

    this is not a real science-y question of equations and complex theories but
    here it goes.
    I am calling on anyone to find the difference between a Bord Na Mona Briquette and a Lignite Briquette.

    I know the obvious difference, one composed of compressed peat and the other compressed shale/coal. I tried contacting bord na mona who refused answering.

    Maybe someone knows a way to find which is ultimately more efficient , burning time and heat output. This is about properties of conductivity, thickness of briquette etc i imagine. I could find the dimensions if needed for any calculations.

    What you'd have to do is use a calorimeter to measure the heat capacity of equal masses of the two things you want to measure ,

    what you could also do in a crazy rough do-it-yourself experiment is set up an outdoor coal BBQ . Put A massive pot of water ontop and measure the temperature the water gets too by burning an equal amount of each Briquette underneath it , Of course to be scientifically sound and minimize errors , the water should be the same temp before starting , equal amounts of firelights to be used in both cases etc etc. From this you could estimate the heat capacity of the water , assuming equal amounts of energy are lost to the environment etc etc.



    But it would show which has greater heat output , Plus you could make tea at the end and be all happy.
