I'll admit not the most exciting example... but i'll kick it off!

So myself and my mate were texting back and forth about buying tickets for the Ireland game, both on our Android phones, turns out it is sold out and texts me back, so I suggest I'll look at alternatives to Ticket master over sms...

2 mins later a promotional email pops in from tickets.ie ... coincidence? I think not!!

Post one of those legal mumbo-jumbo chain status things on Facebook saying you don't consent to your privacy being invaded and that you forbid them from doing so.

    That'll show 'em........

Coincidence I think. I got an email from tickets.ie at 15.06 this afternoon and I haven't been looking at tickets for anything lately. Just their weekly newsletter that you are signed up for whenever you buy tickets from them.

EDIT: Just got another one to my Gmail account

That's called Google Now, you can turn it off if you want on the Google Search app on your phone.

I find it quite handy tbh, especially for meetings and appointments, also for getting the scores for matches.

I fear that someday I'm going to drop a cup or a plate in my kitchen and an hour later when I turn on my computer the first ad that pops up is for an online kitchenware store. Eep.

An idiot geek would at least know how to turn these notifications and settings off. Go find one to help you.

When you think about it, smartphones are a spy's wet dream. Always on someone, tracks their location, their habits, who they talk to, etc. I don't feel bothered to a degree as I'm just not that important, but should I become someone who needs privacy more, I'd probably downgrade to a dumbphone.

All those apps that you get for free, which are actually traded for your private information; anyone know if there an easy way of flooding the apps with so much useless information as to make finding your correct details like looking for a needle in a haystack?

Can rooting a phone allow adblocks and other privacy apps?

I think that it can. I think that you can limit info that apps can receive also.

You could also use Adblock plus on WiFi on an unrooted phone. It slowed down my browser, so I uninstalled it.

Thing is that there's so much money in advertising that it pays for all the stuff we get for free. No ads would mean everything would be a subscription service.

I'd much rather pay for these things by letting google tailor ads to me (as if there's any hope in hell I'd buy something from an online ad) than pay for the service myself.

Its the closest thing to free you're gonna get in life.
