Wheelbuilding - ERD question

I will need to rebuild my front wheel shortly. The ERD of the current rim (Mach 1 Omega - quite difficult to find) is 592mm.

Am I correct thinking that there is some leeway in the ERD diameter if I want to reuse the spokes and nipples?

In example, if the new ERD will be 596mm, the spokes will have 2mm thread left exposed at the nipple? (596mm-592mm = 4mm, 2mm each side).

Is it safe to do so?

The wheel is relatively new (4500k) but had once braking surface not-so-mysteriously* worn off... with 32 spokes, they seem to be in good condition.

    * - the skewer was too loose on a few rides and the wheel kept rubbing slightly on the brake pad. My fork has no lawyer's lips so I am happy I'm still alive ;-)

I saw those Mach 1 rims on Ebay recently quite good value. It would be best to replace with the same Mach 1 Rim in that way no problems with the spoke length. I think 4 mm is quite a bit you could probably get away with 2m i.e 1 mm each side but 4mm might be pushing it.

Might be worth contact Humphries in Finglas who are very helpful in all things wheel building.

I'm guessing you could replace 14mm nipples with 16mm to accommodate a 4mm larger ERD but, be aware that a larger ERD means less spoke threads holding the tension and so a possibly greater risk of failure...

longer nipples dont have extra threads, they just have a longer area for use with deep rims for the nipple spanner to hold onto

2mm difference is fine if its a 32/36h wheel, maybe ok for 28h
