I have a few t shirts to return by freepost. Dont want to just fire it in a post box and hope it gets there. I would like to register, is that possible without paying for it?

i would think not. You can go registered post but at a fee.

Is there a tracking thing on it maybe as places like Amazon/littlewoods etc all do tracking on their free returns

    It's House of Fraser.
The most annoying thing is the PO box is about 2 mins walk away, but you can't drop something in for a PO box, I have to walk 5 mins away for the post office!

You can have free post or registered post but not both. Just get a proof of posting from the PO as that usually all firms ask you to do with returns.

Can I get proof of posting without registering then? I though they were one and the same. ie can I post it freepost but get proof of postage for it?

You can request proof of postage for any item but to get proof of delivery (and insurance for any loss) you have to pay for registered post.

Short answer is yes. Mail order companies just require proof of postage.

Just request a proof of postage at the counter.
