Advice: Racing/Training after Illness

    So i've got the flu. Note that this is not the man-flu, but the bona fide influenza virus as diagnosed by the doc! Suffering since Monday and don't expect to feel 'normal' until Saturday. My dilemma is that i've signed up to the Raheny 5 (race this Sunday) and am hoping that someone can advise on the appropriate action to take:
    1) Can I race this, and do it justice?
    2) Should I race it?
    3) Perhaps use it as an easy pace training run?
    4) Skip it completely?

    If the answer is anything but 1, could you elaborate on what a sensible return to full training would look like?

    Personally, I wouldn't do the race. You could set yourself back further.

    Even if you did do the race you likely won't do it justice so why take the risk that you'll set yourself back when it comes to getting better?

    Why don't you hold off on making a decision until Saturday, when you have a better idea of how you will feel? Obviously though, you should err on the side of caution. What did your GP say?

    Thanks for the replies. Definitely intend to be cautious, as the last thing I want is a relapse. I didn't ask the doctor specifically about running, but the certificate he gave me indicates that i'm fit for work coincidentally from Sunday. I suppose in a broader sense i'm asking what the normal approach to returning to full training is, and would a easy pace run on Sunday fit in with that?

    Def go easy for a few days, body may not recover if put under stress of hard pace esp a race. Speaking from experience here, went back too early, would have been better off to take a few xtra days than pushing it too soon

    I'd agree. I insisted on running the Masters Cross Country last year on the last day of an antibiotic. I didn't do that well, felt terrible after, and was coughing for a few weeks after. I think I overdid it.

    I'd suggest taking it easy.
