    Hi,
I'm applying for a job at the moment and i will have to inform the company if i have any previous convictions. I was convicted of a larceny offence approx 16yrs ago and i was wondering is there not a certain time limit that the conviction becomes 'spent' so to speak, they have asked for all my addresses from yr dot so I'm sure it will be easy for them to find out from my address at the time of the conviction, i will reveal my conviction if i have to but would rather not because of the obvious. Thanks.

Only if the offence was committed when you were under 18 years of age:

The Spent Convictions Bill is still working its way through the Oireacthas.

Are you being Garda Vetted? What is the nature of the work? This is the only way they will find out.

Spend Convictions bill will not be law for months, if not at least a year yet.

Which is worse? You don't mention the conviction and they find out
or you mention it, explain that it was a matter that you sincerely regret and that you have had no convictions for 16 years.
If you have a good work record since and good references things may be fine but if you try to hide it and they find out it will be worse for you

It's not really a matter of trying to hide it though, I mean they WILL find out about it, there is no way around that.

If the offense has nothing to do with your job, and it was 16 years ago then it should have no effect at all. It's cases like this why the Spent Convictions bill needs to get signed into law asap.

I agree you fully & as i have found out here that there is no 'spent' time in yet so it has to go down on the form & i do have a perfect work & driving record so ill have to rely on that. Thanks
