took my car in to get rear brake pads fitted last october, 2 days ago i took my car into a different garage coz i moved to dublin since, and they recommended changing the discs due to only 40% of the discs being used by the pads, and they said buy new pads also. did all this but they found when the last garage changed the pads, the screws u get with the pads for the calipers...... was sheered off in the fitting, and they glued the rest of the screw into the calipers and left me drive off. it was highly dangerous as the calipers could have came undone and the pads would have followed leaving me with no brakes. now i just want them to pay for the new calipers and labour but im wondering should i do more?????

I find that extraordinary to the point of not believing it.
What is to say that the current garage have not sheared the bolt and blamed the last fellow. If its the bolts that attach caliper to guide pins, I cannot see how it would have stayed intact since then if glue was all that was holding it.

Question: Is one of the garages a large chain type operation?

Even if it was the original garages fault which I doubt persueing them is a waste of time.

if the garage its in now did shear the bolts y not just gt new bolts and say nothing?? i mean thats not worth making up a story just for shearing bolts??

From a garage that dont seem to be contesting the fact that they glued the brakes back together? I wouldnt let them within 100 miles of my car again...

So the previous garage immediately admitted to reckless practice even though is 4 or 5 months ago?

Sorry, I just find it hard to imagine any mechanic would glue a bolt into a caliper, it just doesn't make sense.
Did the first garage admit to this happening? Or did they just offer a free service because you complained about something?

    What kind of car?

Garage No2 seems to be going to a lot of bother to paint garage No1 in a bad light.

vw passat 02. but i don't see why they would want to if it was garage no.2 that sheered the bolts!! ..... just put in new bolts and everything is fine... Why make up a story over bolts???

No I'm not saying that they are wrong. They could well be correct.

If the caliper bolts were glued in, you'd have got about 2 km before the caliper sheared off - under braking, those bolts are under hundreds of newtons of torque trying to pull the caliper around with the disc. If even one was glued, you'd have noticed as the brakes would be locking due to the caliper twisting onto the disc and that's assuming it was the upper bolt that was sound and the lower glued. If the lower was sound, the upper glued, it would have sheared almost at once. Somthing about this is sort of 2+2=5.

Also, the calipers would be ruined from twisting onto the discs so you'd now need new calipers, which they didn't appear to say you need. Me personally, I find it very hard to believe things are as they are being stated. I could well be wrong and getting the wrong end of the stick, but I'm kinda hmmmm. Any chance of pics?

Very strange this. I would have put money on it being the current garage but if the phone call to the other garage is anything to go by, he must be a cowboy. If you were to call any reputable garage and tell them that they allowed you to drive around with brakes that were a death trap, they would jump down the phone at you. Last thing they would do is offer free work if they were not involved.
That still doesn't answer how it all stayed together.

You should report to the Gardai. Potential attempted manslaughter here

    That's a ridiculous idea tbh

Threadlock can be an extremely powerful bolt holder. Im guessing thats what they used rather than actual glue. Tbh I could see that lasting for a few months if the threads were even badly damaged. But that is genuinely an angering op

Ring the first garage back, tell them to shove their free service, and ask for your money back from their cockup.

the following was found wrong with the calipers:

replaced 2 rear calipers due to both seals damaged and pistons stuck.
Found 2 bolts on d/s/r caliper broke in half and stuck/glued in place.

The guy in the first garage agreed to pay the 250€ with no argument what so ever!!!!
