    Why dont you consider a Bridge Camera, not a point and shoot and not a DSLR but a good halp way point between both, about 300-500 in a variety of brands, have a look in the likes of PC World, they have a good selection.

    Why not look at the Sony Nex range, DSLR quality but not bulky or heavy as a DSLR.
    I have a Sony Nex 5r and love it.

    If you want better image quality and flexibility than a point and shoot without the bulf of a DSLR, then the Micro Four thirds system is the best option. http://www.four-thirds.org/en/index.html

    Better than the Nikon or Canon's offerings in this category, like the J1 you linked to.

    For the ultimate in small size and superb image quality, particularly video, the Panasonic GM1 is a marvel.
