I am selling my car and the insurance and tax are out - tax is actually ok to end of month. I can't let anyone test drive as my policy is gone. If someone has their own open drive policy can they drive it? I want to be 100% sure

open drive has nothing to do with this.

If they have third party extention it will allow them drive your car as long as its taxed and NCTd

Maybe, the t&cs vary by policy. The potential buyer would need to satisfy themselves that they are covered, and the OP needs to bear in mind that the cover will almost certainly be third party only - ie damage to the car itself will not be covered.

Will be clearly written on any insurance cert / policy booklet a potential buyer will bring with them, something I would personally ask to see if they are planning to drive it. Most are 'Car must be Taxed' however I have seen some with the whole 9 yards of "Must be taxed, insured and NCT'd" And as already said, the cover will be mainly Third Party so be sure you trust them ;)

I was always under the impression that while I can drive any car (with owners permison) the actual car in question had to have its own insurance policy. Unless they have garage insurance or the like. Obviosuly policies must differ greatley.

that's not the case with most insurance (it is however compulsory in the UK so only a matter of time before it is here)

Used to be a pretty common stipulation I think but it doesnt seem to be the case too often any more.
