New Hunting Scope: Questions and Feedback

I am finally about saved up to get my new hunting scope.

I usually go with a 3-9 variable magnification. However, 4-12 works. I do not want to go too high as you usually lose the low end which I would like to keep less than or equal to 4x.

I love my Burris Fullfield II and the Ballistic Plex reticle for most hunting and varmint/lamping situations. However, I am now wanting those last few minutes of day light. Where high end glass excels.

If anyone is hunting with the Z3, which is about all I can afford, please advise how you like it, what you have had in the past, and what reticle you are using.

Also, to all of the hunters out there. Do you hold over or click in?

I really do not want to have another gadget and have always used holdover. However, I have seen remarkable results with Strelok and simple cross hairs as opposed to the BRH.

I do not have Strelok nor an iPhone. I range with my Leica and holdover.

I was thinking about the BRH reticle, but it is a bit busy.

The 600 - 700 yard range on the BRH reticle would be nice to have, not for game, but paper targets which the scope will shoot a lot of in the off season. I'll have to see how my cartridge compares to the ballistics chart.

Lastly, given my low light considerations, the bell needs to be around 50mm.

Any comparisons to the Zeiss Conquest, Duralyt, or HD5 would be appreciated.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

My vote is to dial in elevation and hold for wind
I'm not going to tell you which scope brand to get but get the best glass you can with tactical turrets..

I had a fulfield ii 4-16 and now use Steiner tatical military 3-12*56 for hunting I got it from europtic for $1600 they seem to be running at $2200 in other places at the moment. The Steiners glass is far superior for low light and on a par or better than s&b night force Ior and the other top brands and with the tactical turrets it is so easy to dial in and out. I also use sterlok and with factory rounds I have taken clays at 525 yards from a cold barrel. The first deer I got with this set up was at 453 yards range it dial it in and presto.

I had a Z5 5-25X52 BT Plex sold it on here, currently use the z6i BRI which is just as good.If you can try & get the BT for the Swaro, dial in your cartridge & load on Swarovision.Outstanding results & is extremely accurate. It is a simple system & imo better than the hold over, also I found with the side parallax you can quite easily judge distance by using that alone under the 3-400 yard mark.Slowly switching to Zeiss Scopes now as the glass is excellent. The Z3 is a very good choice I find the Swarovski is one of the finest hunting optics you can buy.Still regret selling the z5 TBH.Good luck with it.

Also I would check that the click value is 1/4" @100y for a hunting scope.
Not 1cm @100m which I believe is 1/3" @100y, makes a big difference at the longer ranges.
