Personally I use Google maps and can see distances from the beach , and see is the Apartment near a shop etc.
Type in an Apartment in Tenerife you like the look of and see the surroundings.

Stayed here in the Dinastia Apartments in Los Cristianos walking distance from Playa de Americas - nicer quieter area. Less than 10 minutes walk to the beach. Has a good selection of restaurants and a shop beside it.

Apartments are very nice ... very new, modern and spacious!

area of las americas beside los christianos is nice for family and nice pubs/restaurants. Keep away from the veronica strip at the other end of las americas

the north of tenerife is nicer than the south. the best beach on the island is easily playa las teresitas just outside the capital santa cruz, its also much quieter there than los cristianos

worth checking out Parque Santiago III, we stayed there about 4 years ago and have just booked there again for this year ( and we rarely book the same accommodation twice). Its in a really nice area - go out the front and you have shops / good restaurants, go out the back and you are on the beach. the pool is big and well... its definitely worth a look. Google maps & street view are your friend ;)http://goo.gl/maps/Jzlrf

My wife and I chose the north side of the island in Puerto de la Cruz as we wanted to stay in what we felt was a more authentic and less Ireland/UK touristy area. We stayed at Apartamentos Casablanca which has parking and is in walking distance (downhill) to the coast, nice restaurants, supermarket, and the pleasant seafront public pool complex that is Lago Martianez.

As part of our trip itinerary we drove to Mount Teide (definitely worth it), as well as the quaint historic towns of La Orotava and La Laguna (also both worth a visit).

    Hope the advice helps...

You can't go wrong with Paloma Beach in Los Cristianos, increasingly booked out, they're right on the sea front, lovely spot as it still has a bit of the old pre-touristy charm. Google them, they have a great website. As someone said, check Google maps, you'll find that Dinastia - as someone recommended - is up a hill and ten min walk at least from any beach - I lived in Tenerife for 2 years so I know!! It's a new, soul-less complex. Parque Santiago is in Las Americas, it's gorgeous, but a bit pricey. The nice thing about Paloma Beach is it's away from the touristy areas, but if you want bars and nite life you can't go wrong with Parque Santiago.

Parque Santiago lll is in a fabulous area surrounded by shops and restaurants and if you want to stroll up to Veronica's it's a 10 minute walk and a 15 walk to Los cristianos
