So my friend and I are looking for a really good city break in Europe and wondering about the best destinations. We were in Krakow fairly recently and loved it. We'll be going to Prague next year because my sister will be moving there for erasmus so I'm looking for ideas other than that one. Also I live in Edinburgh so the UK isn't really in contention for a holiday. Essentially, I'd love a place that has brilliant night life as well as interesting historical tourist attractions. Has anyone any good suggestions or experiences?

I opened this fully intending to recommend Edinburgh.

I would highly recommend Budapest. Great value, good nightlife and lots to do.

I did the exact same thing.

We should go visit the OP.

Madrid. Providing you can stay up 'til after 3am. Gets a bit warm in high Summer.

To be fair, Edinburgh is beautiful so it would be a brilliant suggestion if I wasn't living there. Thanks anyway! Also, I think I've probably spent too much time in After Hours when I looked at that and tried to decipher whether it was sarcasm or not!

Another vote for Budapest! Brilliant city with so much to do and the night life is fantastic!

Paris, was there for 3 nights last November and we only spent €550 there. That includes eating out 2 or 3 times a day, entry to all the sights, transport and a Saturday night out. And it is an amazing city imo. Also if you are 25 or under you get free entry to the museums, arc de triomphe and half price to the Eiffel Tower.

It has a reputation as an expensive city but if you look around you can do it relatively cheap.

Thanks everyone. I'll keep all of these suggestions in mind! I was actually considering Paris because we could get the bus to London and then Eurostar it there.

I can't recommend Carlow enough. Beautiful town. I did it last year and only spent €669 over two nights. Most of that was on coffee and chicken rolls but the smell of hot rubber and petrol is something you just don't get on the continent while dining out.

To be honest, Carlow is a bit metropolitan for me. We wouldn't be used to that kind of diversity and city living in Tipperary.

Check out Ljubljana, Slovenia. There is a river that snakes through the old town with bars and cafes overlooking it. Full of cobbled streets, food markets, a castle overlooking the city which is open to tourists. A very funky vibe going on as well as it has a cool art district (Metalcova). Can't reccomend it high enough.

    How about Bordaux.
It's a beautiful city, we visited a few years ago and loved it.

if you liked krakow then as others have suggested budapest is a must.

places like barcelona, madrid, lisbon, florence, bergen, berlin, munich are all great weekend breaks as well and fit the 2 categories you are looking for.
