Teaching An Old Dog New Tricks

Hi folks just wondering if anyone has been in the same predicament or can shed some light on the subject.

The dog is 3 this month, she's a cocker x weimaraner, I got her when I was unemployed with the intentions of training her but having my shotgun stolen along with all that that entailed plus myself finding employment it never happened.

Her good points are she has extreme retrieving drive(ball/bumper) along with food drive, great swimmer, not gun shy, and she hunts, I had her out a couple of times this year and she's flat out flushing snipe, great nose on her!!

She stays within 25/30yards of me in the field, never tries to run off, if she did go a bit far ahead I'd tell her to come in and she would no problem.

Bad points, she's not steady she's feckin nuts to get after whatever you've thrown, its like telling a greyhound to sit while its after a hare at a coursing meet, although she will sit/stay under normal circumstances.

She doesn't like picking up dead game(although she hasn't seen much of it) she'll pick a bird up by the wing, walk back a couple off yards to me, drop it, etc. etc. something that would never happen with a ball. A few wings cable tied to a bumper will probably help there.

She's terrified of strange dogs, she gets on like a house on fire with my other dogs but I don't think she'll ever work if I'm out with a friend who has his dog with him.

    Not whistle trained.

Just looking for opinions on what to do first, a bit of structure to the training plan, should I try and steady her first, work on picking up dead game, how would you go about it if you had to basically. Not looking for a FTch just an honest worker.

    Thanks:)

Start with the wings on the dummy if shes not losing her mark and it doesnt bother you then no need to steady start firing a shot before each retrieve and get a friend to throw for you she will mark better seem shes hunting and recall is good just mix it up a bit ya know yourself move from dummy to cold to shot game thats wat id do does she point/set or is it a positive flush like a cocker

Thanks, she flushes, I don't know if you'd call it a positive flush, she's just following her nose instinctively, she's kind of gets a fright or a bit of a surprise when a bird flies up:D, I don't think she really knows what it is she's actually after yet, it still has to click with her, not that its her fault.

if you get the retrieving right you could have a good one

sounds to me like she needs game shes using her nose and finding game and flushing

she seems to have all the basics now she needs to complete the puzzle and figure out what that fecking thing that always fly away is
