Makes sense, he held back Ireland economically for decades and basically turned it into a repressive theocracy. Tales of his actions during the rising in Bolands mill paint him as someone who was a highly incompetent, irrational, emotional wreak who would have done anything to preserve his own life when captured. Some say he became a British agent in exchange for his life, and the fact that he was born in America was a convenient cover story for not executing him.

About as much a British agent as Chamberlain was a German one. Both were pretty blind leaders regarding their biggest enemies. but that doesn't mean they were working for thme.
