Ohh old Paxxy is brilliant when he's on top form. Irish interviewers? I know he (rightfully) gets some stick nowadays, but Gay Byrne at his best could draw people out in a very un obvious fashion and get them to spill the beans.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

We tend to disappear them if they come on strong.

I thought the interview was kind of silly.

The amount of sugar in coca cola is well documented, but what is the guy meant to say?

"Yes, Jeremy. I'm sorry. We won't do it again."

Clearly he cannot go out and speak his mind and represent the company in a negative way, as he would lose his job.

I think the man went as far as he could by implying that people should regulate their own sugar consumption and are free to make that choice.

If Paxman was in Ireland he'd be sitting twiddling his thumbs because none of the politicians would go on the show.

You mean a presenter filled with Faux-Outrage just to show "The Man" that he/she is on the side of the little people? We have loads of them.

I am on the side of the Coke guy. I do not drink normal coke because it has too much sugar, I drink Diet or Coke Zero. Coke are not forcing people to drink their drink. The levels of sugar and calories in Coke are not a secret.

The only thing I got out of that was that there's the same calories in a half a croissant or cappuccino as a can of coke.

Cappuccino + croissant = 3 cans of coke.

All that interview did was to confirm that I shouldnt feel so guilty putting 3 sugars in my tea.

The Coke guy won that one.Hysterics and dramatics are pointless.

The problem in Ireland is that if RTE go hard against politiicians from FG or FF they'll have their budget slashed next time out.

There's also a cosy relationship between them all...Terry Prone who has worked as a media advisor top most major Irish politicians (including Enda & FG) is married to Tom Savage, the Chairman of RTE board. Don't bite the hand that feeds you.

    Paxman at his best here.....

I thought the Coke rep was poor but Paxman wasn't much better. It was a bit of a stunt he pulled and he talks over people when they're trying to respond. That's good if someone's being continually evasive but you have to give them a chance to speak first.

    Not exactly true.

He was told to keep the interview going through his ear-piece because of a problem with the next item.

    Still made good television though.

I don't have much time for that sort of hectoring and badgering interview. There are many fine interviewers in Ireland, most of them plying their trade on the radio.

Sean O'Rourke is a tough interviewer, as is Cathal Mac Coille on Morning Ireland. Rachel English and Pat Kenny have a slightly more slight, yet probing style of questioning. Matt Cooper can also ask the tough questions when he wants to. Sean Moncrieff is excellent at the lighter and more frothy lifestyle style interview.

Insomuch as Gaybo was a patronising cnut, he was well able to give interviewees enough rope to hang themselves on air, without them knowing it until they read the papers the following day.

Was worried there for a second but luckily my local cinema stuffs the containers with so much ice there's no room left for any coke. Phewww!

Carol Coleman is still reporting for RTE news, heard her on the TV the last night.

We have Vincent the Bulldog Brown.

They don't sell Coke or Diet Coke in my local cinema. And it wasn't Jeremy Paxman that caused it. The projector broke during a Roy Rodgers flick in 1959 and the place has been shut since. Every Monday night at 7.30 ........... 6p for young wans ans 9p for adults.

Yep, frequently as bullish as Paxman.

If only we had a few dozen like him.

Vincent Browne would be even better if he could string a sentence together.

Miriam has a pretty tough approach, Claire Byrne's interviewing style is great I think - kitten for a bit, then the claws come out.

Always admired Paxman until heard him on a interview with Sean O Rourke a few months ago. He was talking about a book he wrote about WW1. Soon became apparent that the man is a pompous ass of the highest order. When I thought about it I realised he always has been a scoffing toff. Newsnight is just news for the polo set. Wouldn't one agree?

Hear, hear. I only got through the first clip but the only excuse of such incoherency is senility or drunkenness.

We need more hard-hitting interviews like this:

Well said! I find the Paxman / Humphries / Vinnie Browne style of interrupting, bickering, talking over the answer, etc. really childish and annoying. I would like the chance to decide for myself if the answer is evasive or irrelevant and not have to witness a sensation-seeking egomaniac interviewer, fed by his earpiece, doing his best to talk over the guest.

Robin Day (remember him?) was formidable....but he actually listened to the answer / allowed the audience to hear the answer before countering with another blow. And Gaybo had a way of mining a personality but in pleasant, non-combative way. Oh well, the race to the bottom exists in many, many areas.

As for sugar in Coke, hold the front page! Read the label. Or maybe they should go back to the original recipe.....with cocaine!

Their marketing and advertising departments are insidious. Coca Cola still runs programs in the US to get waiting staff in restaurants to offer Coke instead of water and incentives doing so. Look up H2NO.

Edit: I don't think the program runs anymore.

    From Coca-Cola.ie
    Our mission is:
To refresh the world - in mind, body and spirit
To inspire moments of optimism - through our brands and actions

So you see, it's actually not about selling fizzy drinks at all.

Paxman's interview technique has become a bit of a dog and pony show rather than strong journalism

The only consolation is that the people he sets up usually deserve a good roasting

Wrong just plain wrong. We haven't got one interviewer who is brave enough to ask the hard questions bar maybe Vincent Brown. Lol at the naming of the RTE employees, yeah like RTE really want to ruffle feathers :pac:
