Visa Waiver Program - entering via Canada / different carrier tickets

Wondering if someone would have experience of this before I deal with the byzantine phone system at the US embassy here.

First issue is that I'll be in Canada prior to entering the US - as a tourist and not as a transit passenger. The visa waiver website doesn't have info for Canadian entry considering its a completely different system they have for that border.

Additionally the site specifies you need a "round-trip ticket" to be covered - I, however, intend to be going in to the US on United (an allowed carrier, obviously enough) and back out on Aer Lingus (also allowed). Do they consider this a "round trip ticket" if its booked on two completely seperate PNRs?

As far ad I know, if you have a valid ticket out of the US within 90 days then you will be fine entering the US on the visa waiver, from wherever that may be.
