Hi all - getting married in a few months abroad and was quoted 350 quid extra for a wedding album. I think thats steep and was looking into doing something myself, as close to professional as possible

Would anyone have any ideas?

It's hard to say whether that's steep or not without knowing the type of album it is. Lots of people are using blurb.com these days. My sister's wedding package included a blurb book. She hasn't got around to picking the images yet though so hasn't got the book. I'm waiting to see hers myself and then will probably go that route. I got a friend to shoot my wedding and just got the retouched images.

I use Blurb for clients - much cheaper than a traditional album and very nice quality. If you need any help with it, send me a pm, I'd be happy to help.

I've used blurb to put together a 200+ page photo book and was very pleased with the software you use to produce the book, quality of the finished product (you have choices in relation to covers and paper quality) and delivery times.

I went with their highest quality paper, 222 pages ... as far as i remember it was around €180 delivered.

one thing to be careful of with cheap prints, longevity ie that they not going to fade

an you imagine say in 30 years wanting to say show the grandkids your wedding photos and they have faded away!!!

Would the high quality stuff from Blurb have longevity?

Don't most modern wedding photographers use Blurb/Smugmug etc?

no most wedding photographers dont use blurb, well in my opinion

most of them, well most of the ones i know you one of the pro album suppliers

as for longevity depends on which product etc, including which stock its printed on

Without wanting to sound pretentious but most wedding photographers would use anything but blurb etc.

Theyre fine for a book of family snaps or something like that buy thpey're cheap rubbish compared to a proper professional bound storybook album.

In that case, could you or anyone recommend a good site or Irish printer for high quality printed photo books?

I was at a wedding show recently and most of the photographers were doing hardback books. They looked to me like what I would expect to see from Blurb/Smugmug etc, so I'm a bit confused now.

I don't think that you will get pro quality for low price.

What I find is that the client will dictate the price of the album. I'm always happy to do a "proper" album for people but I find that the majority will want a photo book from Blurb or equivalent. The days of couples spending €800 on an album is well and truly gone IMO

I think it's photographers providing blurb books because that's what the client wants rather than them trying to pick a cheap option. A lot of people are going down a less formal route for their photos but also want to spend less. Some friends of mine brought their photo album to show us a couple of years ago and it was incredibly well done. I imagine it cost a lot but I haven't seen a photo book that could come close to matching it for quality.
